Work in an industry with high demand. I am an engineer and I have had a lot of choice on where I have wanted to work while still making good money. California is booming with engineers
I was thinking about becoming a Web Developer for that exact reason! Also because I'm a nerd & like coding, ha (never hurts to be able to design & develop!) In the design/technology industry UX/UI designers are in high demand and I don't see that slowing down anytime soon, like Slashdog mentioned the internet is only growing. You can also end up surfing with these dudes http://www.theinertia.com/business-media/what-is-a-silicon-beach-surfer/
A couple years back, an ice cream truck near me was busted for selling boot-leg porn movies. "Here is your ice cream sir, would you like to add a copy of, Big Butt Booty Freaks to that order?" LMAO
"$66,220 The BLS reports the median salary for a registered nurse was $66,220 in 2013. The best-paid 10 percent of RNs made more than $96,320, while the bottom 10 percent earned less than $45,630. The highest-paid RN positions are clustered in California, including the metropolitan areas of San Francisco, San Jose and Vallejo."
That's funny. Way back in the day there was a guy who drove an ice cream truck at MB. He sold a lot more than ice cream. Cops started wondering why whenever the truck came around a bunch of dirtbag skaters and surf kids would be chasing the truck down. I think his name was Big Perm or Big Worm or something.

My buddy is retiring as a county lifeguard after 30 years. He goes to Barbados and PR every year. He gets the big pension, plus he married well. I asked him what is he gonna do after he retires. He smiled and said, "Nothing".
Yacht maintenance and captain for hire will get you to lots of cool places, (with lots of rich a$$holes). But if you bring your board, you'll make money and get to surf, and will be outdoors. Expert knowledge and proficiency in marine electronics, engines, fiberglass, teak, etc. plus fishing expertise and navigation acumen required. It's a hardknock life, but really cool.
great post barry. like mr o barry said lol, don't choose a career in what u love.u get burnt out that way.like if u got a job being in an office doing work for sanuk and get to surf trestles every day, after a few years and billions of drop ins you will be ready to quit surfing. my brother for example is into the whole car racing thing.he doesn't drink, doesnt smoke, doesnt do any drugs, hes a straight shooter has 3 kids and his refuge is his tools and his car.he can do literally, literally, literally any thing to a car.u can give him a lawn mower,a hair dryer and some table legs and hell make a fukin car out of the thing.i wish I knew how to do the shyt he does.he just says he learned through trial and error, nobody ever taught him.now with his skills,he could be making a hell of a lot more money doing mechanic work than his current job but says if he did it everyday he isn't going to want to work on his own car or anyone elses if he does it for a living. so if ur into surfing work on the oil fields or gold mines.these people work 6 months a year and rake in 100k and are free to do whatever they want for the rest of the year.its your choice, avoid manual labor,it sucks and u will have no time to surf
