I agree, LB, as long as no one is causing harm to others because of their belief. But, sadly, thats not always the case, e.g. ISIS. Religious dogma is a stain on the human race.

But, regardless of that, this tread was started because of being put down for my belief, or rather, my unbelief.

Sorry, but isn't our ability to believe in something we have no proof for the very essence of our soul? I mean if not that then what is human spirit? Doesn't matter what you call it, I doubt anybody who spent any real time in this life can honestly say they don't possess a form of faith, that or another. Or are we angry with someone?

Nah, mang, don't like me: you'll screw with my HOTY votes.

    Ah, jest funnin widja.

Like ah said: humans are weak & malevolent. Our species fukks up everything it touches. Everything. Without exception. Show me a good scenario & I'll show you the bad situation that some clown human created to 'save it.'

Yah that's right: the prince of pragmatic thinking, kidzz.

People invent shiiite to get through Life. Been going on forever. One of my faves: the Incas were carving out human hearts from strapped down living people & also sacrificing virgins in the name of a good crop. Why? Essentailly because they had lousy weather forecasters.

    What's changed....?

Metard, dude, I don't hate people because they are catholic, or whatever their belief is. My rents are catholic, and I surely don't hate them. I just ask for the same respect that others demand. Because, it seems like atheists/agnostics don't get it. People see us as immoral, godless beasts. My point being, it's not right.

    A favorite quote of mine:

"Well, I believe in the soul, the caacck, the poossy, the small of a woman's back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve."

people do extreme things when they feel threatened, therefor religious extremism and any kind of aggressive recruitment towards your own belief for your own (or your religious bases') gain is, in itself, anti-thetical (if we are to believe the general "peacefulness" roots of any organized religious belief).

breath deeply and be one with your surroundings, forgive daily, and believe that you must as well to be better and better those you come in contact with and those they come in contact with...i'm sure once you are then reduced to the basic elements you are created out of will be rewarded...or the next being (amoeba, plankton or otherwise) will be rewarded as well...feed the fish

Don't take what scientist say as God given facts, pun intended. We have our own agenda of trying to become published and recognized. Keep in mind that most we know about cosmology, evolution, and physics are theories based on assumptions and inferences. They are not laws or facts. Most things today still cannot be explained, calculated, or measured.

And religion isn't a petty thing, to many it is the largest meaning of life.

I hate doing this, but I don't want to seem like someone that doesn't believe in science.

Well, I don't believe in god, so I wouldn't take anything as a god given fact.

If you truly are getting your PhD, which I am not denying you, you should know that most fundamental laws, or "theories" in science, are based on empirical, predicted, repeatable data.

The "theory" of evolution is no longer a theory. It was, nearly 150 years ago when it was written, but it is now considered a scientific FACT. It has not been proven wrong in 150 years, and it is backed by an overwhelmingly large body of evidence. If they were to find one fossil out of place in the sedimentary rocks, it would fall apart and would be completely discarded.

the word "atheist" naturally has a satanic sound to it...stupid and/or superstitious people can't get past that.

I was born in another country and my one of my parents was an alcoholic and the other a workaholic...we kids had zero supervision and never had any religious brainwashing. I moved to the USA when I was 8 yo and we moved with my grandmother. She was ultra-religious (baptist)...so much so, she even traveled all over the world every year as a missionary (she literally called them "heathens"). Needless to say, I was immediately forced to go to church several times a week and partake in the most mind-blowingly bizarre church activities (rapture party, anyone?)

Even all through high school these fanatic a-holes tried to brainwash me, but I guess they started too late...in fact, they actually pushed me to atheism.

It's sad how most people are part time religious...they claim they're christians, but they only go to church or do anything religious "just in case". I've been around enough to know most of their free time is spent watching porn, getting drunk and gambling. I don't have any more respect for these people than I do the fanatics.

Until one can explain nipples on men and why humans have a vestigial tail (coccyx), the "creation" argument is invalid.

    wrong.
its not all good; even if you decide it is.
the disrespect of science is a cancer that only courage can cure.
education is the path we must choose; superstition is a tar pit for humans.

and....another thing. those of you singing the praises of baloney belief systems - such as the arab/jew
argument - would do well to familiarize themselves with the stark consequences of the warfare in
syria that has left 200K dead. the chlorine bombs especially.

this from op/ed page nyt about a month ago:

"the nine year old burned on over half his body finally woke up in the hosptial and was told his parents
and siblings had perished in the gas attack. through tears he asked if he would ever be able to go
    back to school."

you have a right to behave like this over diety-stupidity?
    the hell you do.

so i am very very very not religious. and i think the creation argument is silly. the foundation for the basis of the universe is: it says it in a (scientifically inaccurate) book so it must be true, and its the book of god so it hast to be true, because, well, ya know, it says it here in the book that its the book of god so...." its circular nonsense.

but on that same note, there is soooooo much we do not know about the universe. so for anybody to have a definitive alternative to religion is pretty silly to, or to definitively rule out the existence of a god is not something we have the capacity to scientifically deduce. one cannot cite a working theory (about the creation of the universe) as a solid alternative to creationism. we can pretty much rule out that creationism didn't happen. thats agreeable. but we cannot rule out the existence of some mind blowing ball of energy somewhere in the universe that transcends our capacity to comprehend it.

for creatures that were roaming around with sticks building fires in caves 15k years ago, we have done a pretty impressive job. i can take a pic of my wang and send it to a girl in australia on my phone, and we can do kidney transplants. those are miracles. with our technology we have done an amazing job figuring out the mysteries of our species and the history of the earth, where we have come from, etc. but the universe is a big theoretical place.

ask a woman in rural bolivia if the world is flat or round, and if the earth revolves around the sun or the sun revolves around the earth, and she will say the earth is flat and the sun moves, not the earth, because its all she knows. she has never seen a science textbook in her life so if you tried to explain the solar system, she would find you just as silly as wayne trying to explain that the dinosaur is god testing our faith.

and this is where religious leaders have failed religion. its the idiots in charge that lead children's crusades and burn people at the stake, lead jihad movements, cover up molestations, or drive the coast luring kids into vans with surfboards and then molest them. when religion is affixed to the state or a national identity, horrible things happen.

religious zealots stick out, but sometimes i have to remind myself that most religious people are just scared everyday people that want to go to work everyday and feed their kids.

i am an ordained minister in the Church of the Dude (from the Big Lebowski). I can perform wedding ceremonies if you're so inclined. Dudeism has its perks.

my god is the great foam ball. the barrel is the temple.

I think you should be burned at the stake as an heretic, but only after you are drawn and quartered, and disembowled as was common practice in Tudor England.
Once that is done, then you can post your ideas. Okay, go ahead....post 'em.
