This from Central FLHurricane website :

"Welcome to early May, and in Florida a very unusually cool and nice May weekend, after a very hot April. The Atlantic Hurricane Season starts June 1st, but the front that passed over to bring the cool weather has stalled, and some models have been persistently projecting a non-tropical low pressure to form off the front, likely near or to the north of the Bahamas. The chances have grown enough for the National Hurricane Center to release a special pre-season Tropical Weather outlook.

This system may have a chance later in the week to develop subtropical characteristics as it drifts toward or just east of the Carolinas for in the May 10-13th time frame. However this far out things are quite uncertain. Although it likely won't be a strong system, the subtropical nature will persist a large wind field that can bring heavy surf along the east coast for the week. Expect a breezy week along the coast until this moves away. This makes the late week and weekend forecasts a bit unreliable."

Andrea yes and it's happened first week in June two years in a row. This would be 3wks early. Buoy is SF is 7ft @ 24 right now so I'm about to get stoked on this rounded pin step-up I scored for a nickel on consignment yesterday. If I came back east next weekend to a tropical system in mid-May after the week I'm about to have, I don't think I could ever complain again.

Is El Nino still a possibility?

I'll look forward to more accurate info and clarification, though from what I've heard over the months, we were supposed to have had one in the Pacific this past fall into the winter and it started then faded. Effects were again seen recently like sustained increased water temps - was 58-61F last few months in NorCal til recent upwelling brought it to 53F. Supposedly, it never did happen but the west coast was firing during all damn winter and still is, especially this week with the extra long period. Several sources say it's officially here now since the westerlies have sustained.

Word now is that there could be a Super El Niño next fall into the winter which bodes very well for the drought out west. I've got friends in mid-state farmland whose wells could fully dry up, costing them upwards of $20k to re-drill. Then if certain crops die off, you're losing 20-30 years of them. Rain is a good thing out west but it's been very slim to none for a couple years. I've spent most of Feb-May here and seen rain twice...barely. It's great to have 68-85 degree sun each day in East Bay but ends up being disastrous for much of the inland agriculture and ecosystem, affecting many people and their livelihoods, estates, and families.

Yeah, The Niño means weak cane season in the Atlantic but I'm starting to believe the several cats on here and outward that have advised me just to head west for good if I want sustained surf. This globe is spinning in weird ways these days braddahs. May as well go down surfing.

Is it typical to early season development during an el Nino? I feel like this happens everytime El Nino is mentioned.

Is there anything that is ever consistent in weather?

Spicoli, I'm serous here, are you surfing 10 foot already. I know I know, you tackled 8-10 foot Rhodey in your first couple sessions.

But really, have you tackled the big stuff already?

Since no one can agree what the size of a particular wave is.....

Your standard first floor room, where the wall meets the roof, is a solid 6 foot wave, well subtract 12 inches maybe.

Though people call it Overhead. It's not, really.

And El Nino sucks for the east side. Really. El Nino winters do not bode well for the east side. But what can you do.

As you can probably tell already, Spicoli, the right coast is so far behind other locales for quality surf.

Now don't get me wrong younger guys and new-comers, the east is still fun and nice, especially when you're green. But man we just don't have the quality or consistency.

But then again seeing Rincon doing it with 300 people on it ain't no good either. You can always find a peak to yourself on the east side, unless you enjoy packing together at the same jetty.

Spicloi you ever go to Oakland?

Then once you are done with it, send it up our ways here to New England. Make it on a week day, so all the teenagers (human larvae) are in school being baby-sitted by pseudo-teachers (those unionized) and being totally totally useless humans.

I think we should have at least 5 or 6 separate threads about this by now.

Maybe Sharkhunter's mom fell off a seawall in downtown Charleston while chasing her runaway son down the street, and the ensuing tsunami impacted the nearby coastline.
