"However, Stuart may have had the last laugh, with The New Zealand Herald reporting that not only had Stuart found a buyer, but that the buyer had paid over the odds, purchasing the board for $1.15 million." So he found a sucker. Not everyone with money spends it wisely. This explains why he has been doing work recently with more normal shapes and doesn't seem to care about selling anything.
I like how he said he would not justify the cost, its just a number to him... Just a number??!! At $1 mill, that's a little more than a number!
"However, Stuart may have had the last laugh, with The New Zealand Herald reporting that not only had Stuart found a buyer, but that the buyer had paid over the odds, purchasing the board for $1.15 million." Like I said, you all laugh at Roy and his designs but he's surfing in an ocean of cash right now.
Nah, I never laughed at his designs. I laughed at him (his ego and personality, mostly). His boards were always attractive, and there is always a fool out there willing to overpay for "art". If the stories are true, it may explain why ol' Roy has toned it down recently. I wouldn't have many f@cks left to give if I just made a million either.
Hi Brew, For the best results a beachside house AND a 'Rampant' are recommended Those more normal shapes are a case of me going back continuing where I started in 1994, which was with 7 to 8ft parallel profile versions of 70's singlefins. That development was slowed down by the long boards, but I've still been doing shorter boards periodically for the kids. I just hope that I can make it back down the length scale surfing wise. Using foam means that I can make boards faster so can do both. It would be cool to sell a quiver of the million dollar boards, I'm keen on an orange Rolls Royce and from experience it's more of a blast to have these boards in a collection, as it is with any boards one likes.
I always have to come back to what it actually costs to produce the surfboard. There is no way in hell that it costs even .5%(less than 1% here) of a million dollars to produce it. which brings me to my next thought... who ever bought it must have inherited the money as this person has no grasp of the value of money. well... good for you roy. I imagine you'll be able to buy helmets of different colors now.
Here's the thing though, the ultra rich end of the scale is a different world and a different economy. Some Wall st wallahs for example 'earn' 25 million plus per day... they literally have money to burn and are always looking for cool and and unusual stuff which other people don't have. It's fair to say that they don't have a grasp of the value of money in the normal economy. They just know how to get plenty of it. Damien Hirst's success is a classic example... a piece of plywood with daubed house paint on it done by one of his assistants ( as most of his stuff is produced) sold for a million and plenty more similar works sold besides. The paradox though is that I've always designed the boards solely to get a certain ride not just to look different, though I confess it that it's nice to make unique stuff.
+1 nice wood, but the logo looks like a grammar school student slopped it on. I'm sure it looks fine hanging on the guy's mansion wall...lion side down.
Notice how no other board on this list was sold for more than 50-88k? Yet, some chap swoops in for more than 15x that and says "sure, I'll buy your marshmallow space ship for 15% more than you're even asking!!!" WELCOME TO FANTASYLAND. ED ZACHARY. STILL NO PROOF OF ANY SORT. JUST HACK "NEWS" SITES THAT DON'T SUBSTANTIATE ANYTHING. This tread is as hollow as the rest of the Roy sale treads and posts. Still no empirical evidence of a sale. Not a Shred. Yet all you posting here feed this megalomaniac/psychopath's ego. C'mon, KR. You're my boy. As evidence by the props I even gave you last night on multiple treads. But c'mon, you're a sharp cat, one of the sharpest here. FLY A BANNER FOR PURELY GULLIBLE SWELLERS AND A LONG-BEARDED CHARLATAN
