What's up everyone, I just moved up here from Wilmington.and The crowds at Va beach are insane, is it any better at Sandbridge? oh yeah, your water is COLD! when do you guys hit 70 degrees here?
virginia is rediculously cold. wrightsville beach was 64 degrees today, i even saw people in boardshorts
dude you have no idea if you think its crowded right now wait till june it only gets better , plus dont complain about cold water it keeps the turons out the water
yeah you're right about the water temp and the tourist. I was at TI this past weekend in Nc and was loving the 65 degree water with 80 degree air temp, then back up here with 50 degree water, guess i'll get used to it
Go to either Croatan or the North End(40 street and above). Sandbridge gets very bad too; especially when the water warms up and the kids are out of school, the tourists are in town, and all the "I only surf when the water is warm" people are out. VB usually sucks in the summer anyway unless we get a strong northeast wind or hurricane.
your right about the crowds in the summer but sandbridge is usually not to bad compared to croatan or 1st street especially! sandbridge doesnot usually have the verbal crowd like 1st street
I know I was wrong about Sandbridge. I wanted to keep it a "secret." It never has a "verbal" crowd as you said Venice Beach, cough, I mean 1st street has. I save 1st street for 5-6 ft and 30 degrees usually. Croatan is not bad if you don't mind (no offense to anyone reading this) all the high school kids and it is one of the only places w/o those bs surfing laws in the summer.
Thanks fellas, I'm not trying to be all "yo I'm new tell where the best spots are bra" sorry if it came off that way, I just figured sandbridge was no big secret and wondered if it got super crowded just like va beach. what's the parking situation at croatan and sandbridge?
at croatan in the lot for a $ or on the side of Croatan rd or twighlight for free. If you stay after 7pm they'll tow you. Lot closes at 8.
Sandbridge costs a few bucks at Little Island (pier) but the wave is not that good. The road is free if you can find a spot that some f 'n tourist hasn't taken. The waves are not as good at Sandbridge though. It gets very backwashy at about 2 hrs to low to about 2 hrs after. Think about trying Northend like I said, the parking is free and about at easy and it is closer to everything than Sandbridge is. But hey, if the surf is good in the summer, it is probably not a "beach day" anyway and parking is not as hard.
in sandbridge you should make the 5 minute drive down to S-turns. parking is free but sometimes hard to get a space in the summer. in the winter u can park anywhere u want. and it never charges any $ for parking there. and you can sometimes sneak into the parking at the sandbridge market if u go around the front and into the back
Man, VB is not that crowded you guys... I would love to see you guys surf in San Diego, Talk About Crowded!!!! Just stay away from 1st street, and yes, sandbridge is less crowded. The hiking trail is just that, a trial. But the waves down there are usually sub par. VB just requires alot of checking, knowing where the good sandbars are, and going there. P.S. If your gonna drive to Sandbridge, you may as well drive down south to the outer banks. I know it seems like a *****, but its not that bad. I used to do it multiple times a week. If there is swell go south, you wont be dissapointed. P.P.S If you wanna know a bomb shortcut to the OBX from VB just hit me up with a PM.
STAY OFF THE NORTH END!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU'LL JUST GET BURNED!!!!!!!!!!! No Really though, Stop recommending the NE.
North end has much better waves and is much less crowded! Its better he goes there.... I agree about 1st street. It makes surfing seem almost like a team sport. Do you have a key to the gate that leads to Corova? If so, is it really that much of a shortcut as opposed to taking 168. I agree too about down south, if I'm ever off and there's surf, I'm there. Sometimes even if I get off early or go in late, I go
Oh yeah, VB has a much greater scarcity of waves than San Diego does. I think if I lived somewhere where there was fun surf more than, on average, once every 2 weeks, I wouldn't be so preoccupied with getting as many as I can in such an allotted time.
It's a trick question, there's no where good to surf in VB. Welcome to the worst place in the word for surfing. If you recently quit your job to move here you might still have time to go beg for it back. Seriously, I was in Lake Ontario last month and there were better waves than there's been in VB since last July. RUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!
