FWIW... Firewire calls the Dominator a hybrid. Your bros at the proshops are telling you to get a 6'10 hybrid. Others, including myself, are saying get a 7' hybrid. Give yourself the extra 2", and make the learning curve shorter and more fun.

And BTW... I am NOT saying get a Firewire. I used the model as an example of a hybrid design. I am recommending you do NOT buy a Firewire.

It's a cross between a fish and a shortboard, with some extra volume up in the nose. I think you should be able to paddle it ok if you are in decent shape. It has high performance features (rails, concaves, tail) so it will shred, and you will catch lots of waves, and you can sell it easy if you progress to shortboards on good waves. Maybe go 7' like LB Crew suggests, so you can make the change without loosing any stoke.

like I said, some form of eps/epoxy hybrid or fish. There's Surftech, Santa Cruz, etc...do a search. There's a nice santa cruz "pumpkin seed" on ebay right now, but you can probably do better if you wait.

I bought both the sting fish and the Atlas from Quiet Flight. The website is crap. You have to buy them off the Catalyst website or actually call Bruce Ragan and put in your custom order. Custom order turn-arounds at QF are ultra fast, but the glass jobs are just as weak as CI, Lost and the other big names...another reason why you should go the EPS/epoxy route.

if you insist on QF, get something with a wider nose, like the pylon, double agent, flyer, etc.

Good advice....especially the Double Agent. This is basically the same template as the Rusty Dwart. Really good shape for a advanced learner because it will paddle well but go just fine in bigger surf. About the glassing - If you order a custom from QF in this length 7'0" I'm sure it would be no big deal for them to glass it in a 6/6+6 schedule and the board will be durable.

Dood, please don't get butt hurt from my response. Thx in advance

IMO you're not really surfing yet. Sounds like you're catching whitewash and riding it into the beach.
Anyone with some experience can bottom turn your foam/soft top board or drop in and ride down the line.
Learn to do those things first.

Horsesh!t on the not being able to carve on the board because of the board. Go watch Jamie Obrien fvcking rip at pipeline, on a... wait for it... soft top fun board.

Nobody is telling you to buy another foamie. You are just hell bent on going shorter, and people with far more experience are telling you not to and giving you reasons why. Then again, what the hell do I know after surfing for 20+ years? Do whatever you want.

    2 out of 3 surf shops say I don't know d!ck

Dudes, am I the only one who can see this troll a mile away? Looks like he stole Emass's identity. Roughly same height and weight maybe add and inch and 5lbs. Mentions the 3 states California, Rhode Island, and Massachusettes. The same 3 states Emass bounces around to... alegedly.

Also a newb who claims paddling out and "surfing" large waves. Also thinks he's smarter than the people he's seeking advice from. Argumentative even which is just fantastic, bravo.

Paging Yankee, got a mess on isle 9! Looks like human fecal matter. Might wanna bring a mop.

I think Yankee is in Costa Rica surfing those 12-15 foot waves.

Or this guy, right here in the armpit of the mid-atlantic, pulling in on a soft top fun board.

If you are still thinking about a FireWire, may I suggest the Cornice. It's super durable and you should be able to slip it into that sweet spot just right. You could also talk to FireWire and they maybe able to make it in black for you if you want the bigger size.

He doesn't know where the sweet spot is yet!

It does seem a little far fetched... I don't care if you made a board out of your woman's tampons you are still riding a straight line to the beach. And you say you surfed 8 to 15 foot Costa?? You don't have to prove anything to me, but it sounds a little far fetched. As a beginner/intermediate surfing those size waves, I know you had someone taking pics, let's see 'em! Anyway, good luck, people have given you some solid advice on here, if you don't like it, go to Pac Sun and take their advice. Ha ha. J/k
