So we're staying for a week this summer down in Chincoteague right in the town/island. Never been down there before. So is there anywhere off Chicoteague that is easy access and decent surf spots (non-4x4) to get to to surf down there, or should I just trek up to Assateague Park about 45 min north to surf (been there many times, great spots up there). I'd love to have somewhere to surf close to the house we are renting right in Chicoteague island. Seems pretty isolated down there, away from crowds so hopefully ok to post intel on the forum. If not just IM me. Thanks! Rob
Fisherman's Island at the South end is sweet on the right swell. Need a boat and it's really sharky. I used to take care of a chain of grocery stores on the ESoVa, and I was told Assategue was the closet break not needing a boat. Of course I'da told me the same thing
Check with Mary Lee. She luvs her some Chincoteague & AI. Her Twitter following just went north of 60k humans, btw....
Is the main access road over to the beach have some ok sand bars around that area, or is it just not good at all for surfing. I'll check and scout things out once I'm down there but was just wondering in advance what to expect on a thigh/waist/chest day (chest on a very lucky summer day that is).
there's a federal wildlife refuge blocking any swell you could get to. If it's like back bay, they frown on anyone surfing in their waters.
Its been years since I surfed there, but I doubt its changed much. Around low tide, you will probably find a soft wave breaking right out front of the main parking lots on a waist high swell. Less than waist high will most likely be mushy and backing off. I'm not sure what Chich is talking about. When ive been there you just drive out of town to the federal wildlife area on the oceanfront, park and surf if there are waves. The only people frowning on surfing were the surfers themselves wishing they weren't an hour away from somewhere with better waves.
Just head for the National Wildlife Refuge, pay up (your fee should be good for the whole week, unless you want to get an annual pass, good for CI and the National Park at AI) and drive to the parking lot, park, and surf. It can get quite nice when there's a swell (hurricane). It breaks much like AI in Maryland, further north (because it is the SAME island!!!)
