Has anyone ever camped there? Gonna go down in August with some friends. I heard the skeeters are huge!
and the green head flies. i did it a few times and it totally sucked. did much better at a campground that sprays.
Camping Did it last weekend for the first time. This time of the year the rangers leave you alone for the most part. Skeeters are bad in the summer forrrr sure, especially if theres offshores! Also if your gonna be surfing bring a long board or some board with alot of volume. Great place to surf, very mellow wave, however if it is big its a Btich to get out. but august rarely sees that kind of surf unless theres a hurricane swell coming up
I'm thinking about camping there too, I'm trying to get down there before it gets too far into summer and the mosquitoes get in there.
Assateague sucks for camping unless it's done in late fall or spring. The skeets and horse flys will keep you either in your tent or out in the water. I've actually been tazed all the way out in the line-up by one of them green buggers. Wind direction will make a huge difference as far as the bugs are concerned!
This being my home waters I'll tell you honestly don't bother unless there's a hurricane swell in aug. The place is full of tourists. The skeeters and green heads are vicious and huge. you will be absolutly miserable.
Hey yeah I'll be camping down there this weekend, I've been planning this out for a while. Got some friends I haven't seen in a while coming down as well. Picked a good weekend for weather, but a terrible one for surf Ah well I'll be doing fun other outdoor activities like building fires and drinking. Come find me and say hello
Dude I got blood spots I still can't get rid of on the interior of my car last time I camped there. Stains I can't wash out of the bugs I squashed that had drunk my blood last Spring in Assateague, I reminded every time I get into my car and think to think about camping there again and that night I waged war against those insects, I wont honor them by name cause they wouldn't even let me cook dinner, I ran from the picnic table. It got so bad that I had to retreat back to my car to exact judgement on those that followed relishing in the stains of my blood in their stomachs I squashed. But outside there was no kidding anyone as to had won, it was an insect nightmare that even Central America hasn't matched, they follow you from the surf back over the dune and too your site. Imagine swarms of midges that shadow you in the night that literally bite anywhere because that's what it felt like. I don't know if it's the horse**** or what but it's Dante's 13th circle when those bugs are there so good luck if they're hatching, "deak" level ain't doing **** for you. I am not a fan of the park for that expeirence along with the fact that fees aren't fair if you just want to day trip place and not fish. It's gonna be hot this weekend, lets hope a cold spell takes hold later in the week, a frost that might naturally kill them because eighty degrees is gonna set them off this weekend, in my opinion those damn devil insects are gonna hatch, summers here if there are no more frost producing cold fronts to stop them. Take a lawn chair if it ain't breaking so you can sit in the double Toe high surf and hope for a strong onshore wind so the bugs don't find you. Is it illegal to ride one of those wild horses out of Maryland?
Dude, sorry you sound like a ween. Can anyone back me up/verify that Assateague doesn't even compare to places in NC/OBX? I just gave up when I was down there before in the summer and early fall. After a few hundred, what's a few more gonna hurt? And I don't think they'll be hatching too much this weekend. If they do I'll be prepared. I ain't really worried about it.
I've never camped there, but have non surfer friends who love camping there. The tricky thing with the green heads is that they come out when the winds are offshore... So, in other words when the surf is good, the bugs suck. I dont think the green heads come out until summer time tho. So, if you were going to go in May, I think your can avoid them.
It is still fine there now. Enjoy. By earlyJune the skeeters are quite thick. Not too bad during the day but dawn and dusk are serious blood loss times. Can be unpleasant at those times.
i go down there every year in july. there has always been some sick waves there. im usualy at campground B also so if anybody will be there then, i will to
Just got back from a nice weekend there. Weather was AWESOME but it was like the weakest lame waves ever haha. Oh well had a good time. Chillin' on the beach with a nice little campfire and napping during the day oh man so nice. Just the sounds of songbirds and surf is nice as hell, sunsets and a good beer, mmm my kind of camping
Assateague Can be nice in spring and fall. I usually go there windsurfing, so there is wind and less bugs then. Gonna try surfing this year, had fun in a kayak in the surf but I want to stand up Summer pretty much sucks everywhere. Maybe it woun't be as bad this year with less people traveling because of economy
don't surf near people on the off road zone with kayaks and fishing poles. this usually indicates they are shark fishing. there is alot more life in the water down there, which i think is really cool but some people get freaked. the best way to go down there is to get an OSV (over sand vehicle) permit and cruz down the beach. not as many people down there and there is some spots you can find that break really nice on even small days. low tide is a must though.
Hey Mike, How about 5 dollar round trip tickets to the wedge curtesy of state park trucks or atv's. I'm tired of paddling across the bay. Come on....Hook it up!
i considered camping there but just decided to go more south to frisco,2 years ago, and ocracoke, last year, instead
best place ive come across in the area. the marine life it crazy ya got everything in those waters so be careful..no lie. its hard to get out into tho but its all worth it. ogh ya n as mentioned befor dont go near fishermen... last summer we were out and i was near a fishermen and he pulled in a 5ft bull shark while we were out there then let it back in it was scary gettin back to shore. and the bugs are nathin theres always a lil breeze that blows em back to the bay side so there really not at the beach at all . any questions bout it just ask ill hook ya up
