I would think about going North but I want to see some friends I met last time in the South. Also, my ex brother-in-law has a house in Colorados so I may stay there too. Thanks for the advice guys. About the wife, that's another story. Last time I went to Nica I did the bros thing and I ended up getting into some trouble with the wife. Basically, I can't go anywhere without her. She's low maintenance too so she probably won't care. On a side note. What do you all think about drinking the water? I'm pretty sure it's a bad idea, but what if we're at a restaurant? If they don't have bottled water just drink Toñas?
Definitely stay off the tap water, bottled only (which you can get just about anywhere). Can never go wrong with Toña
Damn I knew someone would ask. I'll condense it. The wife and I were in a really low point in our relationship. On the trip down to Nica I met a chick on the plane. She was from Nica and lived in the states as a Spanish teacher. She was coming home to visit her family. Her and I really hit it off. Fast forward, in the end the wife found out I was talking to her for a few months for hours on end. We were so close to splitting. We went through couples therapy, solo therapy, had another kid accidentally. We started communicating better, she started working out and lost a lot of weight. My last trip will be 3 years ago this July when I go back with the wife. I have to say, it was probably the best thing that ever happened to us. She would tell you otherwise. However, we're in a way better place now in our relationship. She still doesn't trust me, which I don't trust myself. So yeah she doesn't let me out of her sight much. Especially when I started kicking around the idea to her that I wanted to go on another bro trip. She said it ain't happening and my buddy doesn't have the funds to go so I said hell lets do it. Her parents will be watching our kids for 2 weeks, it will be good for us to get away. She already knows she can't b1tch about me being in the water all day and she's cool with that. I know you were hoping for a better, more interesting story.
I was surfing right of it there where 15foot bombs rolling though no way would I tackle it. A humbling experience none the less. That's a **** your pants kinda wave.
Yeah I surfed the inner reef section at Popoyo whatever you call it. The outer reef was way out of my league. It looks so shallow. They say it breaks sometimes dry there so definitely a no go for me.
You sure you aren't trying to keep the North a secret? I've had an eye on Aserradores for a long time but haven't been able to go. Went to Popoyo for two weeks and got it good about half the time. Boat breaks are fun and the best option around there IMO. Main break at Popoyo can get really crowded and the vibe in the town is kind of a locals only sketchy feeling. Was buying some herbal remedies from a local named Elvis who tried to rip me off big time. Essentially ended in a wrestling match on the beach and I owned him - my being 80 lbs heavier didn't hurt. As I'm walking out to the break later that day, I see him sitting on the beach as he gives me the universal 'I'm gonna cut your head off' sign. U-turned it, closed up shop, jumped on the next bus, and spent the remaining time at Playa Maderas.
Yeah I had a dude at Santana approach me and ask if I wanted marryjuana, coquina,.........womeeen. Don't ever buy anything from someone like that. Yes they will rip you off. Same thing would happen in a big city in the states. I didn't get a sketchy feeling at all but our guide was local so maybe that was the difference. I'll find out next time when I'm solo with just the wife.
It's called acceptance lol. I've learned that with a 6 and 1 year old I really need to try and make it work. I had to learn to sacrifice myself. It's not about me anymore. It's the kids first, then the wife, then me. It took me a while to figure that out. Perhaps I'll get myself back one day. For now it'll hopefully be yearly surf trips that get me through.
Lol I think I had the same dude ask me was he super tweaked out? And he has a weird ass name tell me what it was, some of the people I was with bought the ****tiest weed I've ever seen in my live. But hey you can go to the airport and any farmacy like in Rivas and buy Xanax over the counter if you like that crap. Don't take it back into the U.S. Though.
Getting super stoked. Trip is about a month out and the short term forecast looks sick. Monday says 8-10', I gotta get in shape quick. They need to stop d1ckin' around and send my new passport already. SURF Chest to head high SW long period swell for the morning with occasional slightly overhead high sets. This builds in the afternoon with sets up to 1-3' overhead high. CONDITIONS Clean in the morning with ENE winds less than 5mph. Glassy conditions for the afternoon with the winds shifting E 5-10mph.
my wife and I will be in sjds from 6/24-7/4. can't wait to get some warm water waves especially after the recent upwelling and water temps back down to 50's
First off waves will definitely be better than home. SJDS probably has the most for the wifey as far as shops and restaurants. There is even a beginner break Remanso just south that she may want to surf. Colorados may be most Americanized as far as amenities. Tola region is definitely incomparable. Sick with Tonas, and I agree Leon was a pretty cool town for its size. Have fun!
I went to Popoyo in 2006. The waves were good, and that outer reef is definitely heavy. It was breaking the first day I was there but too sketchy for me on the first day there. We surfed the surrounding area by 4wd on the beach and by boat. There were point breaks, sand bays, and reef breaks. There is also a constant offshore breeze due to convection from Lake Nicaragua so that helps. Unfortunately, the surf is about the only good thing I can tell you about that place. I will never go back there again. Almost everything else about the place was sketchy. You couldn't go anywhere without having someone watch your stuff (and I mean someone with a gun or machete). The country is very poor and dirty (although there are some beautiful places like Lake Nicaragua). The beaches were covered with trash and the sand was more like dirt. There was little or no infrastructure (everyone has a huge burning trash pile and raw sewage in their front yard. Do NOT drink the water or put ice cubes in your drink. I found this out the hard way and eneded up puking my guts out for 3 of the 5 days I was there fter drinking a coke with ice that I was told had been filtered. My buddy almost got his toe sliced off when our idiot boat guide dropped the boat on his foot while we were helping him launch it. We both found out that medical care is primitive at best if you can even find a doctor. The last straw came when I was stopped by the Military Police on my way home, detained at gunpoint for 30 minutes, and shook down for money because I supposedly didn't have a "permit" for my surfboard. I have traveled and surfed all over the world (in other 3rd world countries) so I'm speaking from experience. The surf wasn't that good. I can name 50 other places with better waves and a better vibe.
You said the waves were good and then said they weren't. I'm still super stoked. Short term forecast has been looking great. Offshore everyday, average size like head high. I went in 2012 and it was great. Not a speck of trash on the beach. Now inland, yeah there was trash in the roads. It's def. 3rd world. Most of the crime is petty thievery, like some cities in the US. I'll bring extra flip flops in case mine end up missing. The cops are corrupt, it's just part of the game. Thanks for the ice tip. I can see forgetting about that. The country is definitely RAW. For some reason I like that though. ;-) I'll report back after the trip around the end of July. If y'all don't hear from me... Call the embassy lol..... No seriously. So where else would you go for a 2 hour plane ride? I mean I'd like to go to Indo but that's too far. I don't want to spend 3 days just to get there. I would want to take off work for a month!
