That's too bad. Try hydrating with H2o, then let us know when your mussels pop.

What other symptoms do you have? When was your last pap smear? I'm no dr., but I've seen a couple episodes of house.

I get them a lot, just drink a lot of water about 20 minutes before you go surfing, and stretch. And it can also be cause by drinking too much water when you're in the middle of your surfing session, (that's why you would want to drink the water about 20 minutes before). And also eat or drink some electrolyte stuff in it, like Gatorade.

    Take midol!

Nah I have actually gotten them too. Only way I can rid of them is to step down and flex the calf which is hard in overhead water.

ughhh i get calf cramps all the time while i'm surfing. they usually happen to me when i begin to turn around after attempting to catch a wave. i usually catch a wave to the beach or the inside to stretch them out. EVERY SINGLE TIME i attempt to stretch it out during a session the pain goes away for a few seconds, but then it cramps up all over again. this process probably repeats about 3 or 4+ times before it actually goes away. it has definitely ruined some sessions for me since my leg is usually sore as fvck by the time i stretch it all out.

but it's strange because when i get cramps on land, i can normally just stretch it out once and i'll be good. it doesn't cramp up again and again like when i'm surfing

The cold water constricts your muscles.

You are potassium deficient. Eat a banana every day; they are rich in K+.
Report back in 3 weeks. My bill is on the way

Then make it 2 bananas a day. Different folks require different intake. You might want to have your electrolytes checked with lab work. If needed go to K+ supplements. Having muscle cramps continuously does signal a deficiency in something. It is wise to have it checked because an electrolyte deficiency can set your heart off into rhythm disturbances. You want to circumvent that, for sure. There is no urgency, but it should be discussed with your MD next time you have a physical. Always remember, your body talks to you; it is wise to listen when it does.
    Have great weekend.

Surfing is like any sport where you get cramps... overuse and fatigue. Plus the cold water sucks the blood away from your muscles and to your vital organs, leaving your muscles stiff (suit up). Prevent cramps by staying: hydrated, flexible, well rested, and having a good diet. Everyone's right, you need Potassium. But don't forget about consuming some foods with sodium. Sodium and potassium are the 2 ions your body needs in order for your muscles to contract/ work. So find out how much of those two you need in your diet and adjust it accordingly.

It tends to happen to me when I get tossed by a wave and clench my muscles too tight. Like when you're going over the falls feet first and you flex your legs for an impact that doesn't actually happen. That's when it usually gets me. I've found not drinking coffee before I surf helps. Also eat a banana, drink lots of water and stretch. Pretty obvious stuff but no one had mentioned the coffee one yet.

Eat a banana and drink coconut water 1/2 hour before surfing.

The Cramps were a really good punk band, they did an awesome cover of "Fever". Lead singer OD'd, of course.
