Sometimes, stoke hits you when you least expect it.

I arrived at night two years ago to a travel destination, and early the next morning walked down to the beach to check the surf. Climbing through the trees, I emerged from the wooded area on the upper beach to step into the sand.. my feet sinking into soft, cool sand as that familiar smell of tropical salt air filled my head... the sound of waves rumbling in my ears. Before I even looked up, from my head to my feet, I felt the stoke rush wash over me... that tingle that makes every hair on my arms and neck start to rise.

I raised my head to see the blue, blue water stretching out to the horizon... framed by steep, green mountains to my left... islands in the distance. I turned my head to the right just in time to see a solitary surfer pull into a perfect standup righthand barrel... clean and smooth... exiting out the back over the shoulder as the next wave in the set peeled unridden down the reef behind it.

The stoke was so powerful... I jumped up and down repeatedly about 10 times... pogo-ing like a 17-year-old at a Dead Kennedys show. I couldn't control myself.

    Yea... stoke is real.

    It's real.
Many aspects or activities related to the ocean do it for me. It used to be skin & SCUBA diving. Also fishing, windsurfing, sailing, jet skiing, kayaking. For the past few years it's been surfing.
Sometimes it's almost spiritual. The smell of the ocean - particularly of kelp along the Calif. coast. West coast sunsets and east coast sunrises. The moon reflecting off the water. Bio-luminescence of the surf at night. The smell of docks and outboard motors. The sound of halyards bumping against sailboat masts. Cooking your catch.
Or just sitting on the beach with a cold one in the evening on the Florida Gulf coast watching lightning in the distance, feeling the balmy wind, and hearing it rustle in the palms overhead. All good stuff. Therapeutic too.

We took my buddies boat out on the bay a few days ago to go skurfing. I have never done anything of the sort before, never been wakeboarding etc. So, my first 3 tries I face planted and was becoming quite aggravated. My 4th time I got up and got the hang of it relatively quickly. My bud hit the haul a**, we were cruising around 35-40 mph, it was pretty exhilarating.

Needless to say, I was f***ing stoking!
