first off rest in peace to whoever it was, never cool to see anyone die, unless they are muslim extremists.so they pulled a body of a 22 yr old man from yonkers ny in bayhead.I think he was swimming in montoloking and his body floated down to bayhead.I don't know if I should use the term "swimming" because obviously he wasn't.its sad but it keeps happening, and it hurts us for surfing after the beaches are closed, they want to keep the guards on duty longer, meaning ur going to pay to get on the beach til 8 pm if they have their way.

I don't get why all these nyorkers flock to jersey,ny has beautiful beaches, and better waves, but most coming aren't surfers.shyt u don't even have to drive u can take the a train to rockaway.

so for u newbs and not so good swimmers.swim with people in sight.if u cant swim more than 50 yards without touching the bottom don't go out past ur waist.my surf spot has that constant berm where u step off the ledge and ur in deep water, then paddle past the sandbar.i can see people drowning in that little lagoon or whatever u call it.

and its summer people!!!the water isn't 37 degrees, theres no nor easter swells in the water, just little windswells, the rips are moderate and wont take u no further than 30 ft from the sand.swim sideways, fly sideways.

when u find urself in trouble, like say in the impact zone, dont try to swim in,swim further out,the water is calm past the breakers,u float on ur back for 5 minutes, dont even haave to move ur arms or legs, just float, get ur breath together, flip over and swim in towards the waves.

That's sad to hear. I will never understand it but i guess I take the ability to swim for granted, seems so normal to do, but i guess not for everybody. Then again, we're not sure what really happened. So more details needed. Good advice to the newbs btw. Salt water is easy to float in... If relaxed.

Sucks to hear these stories, especially since he was so young!

That's why we need lifeguards... 'cause people die. Beaches should be guarded, and the tourists should pay. Not us. It's a very simple formula. I just don't get why towns haven't figured that out yet. They WANT to pay... and will pay however much it costs. Local taxpayers should be exempt. Why should i pay for July and August just because they're here when I use the beach 12 months out of the year? Nobody gives a crap about me and my kids in the water in December. We pay for them, not us, and on top of that, we have to give up our surf spots to them. We should be compensated, really.... when you think about it.

Good chance it was alcohol related. Sad and preventable.

How can anyone know something until they have experience? Lighten up Cepriano.

I dunno man. I am tired of watching perfectly good bodysurfing waves roll in when I'm on the beach chilling with my family, and I can't go for a swim because the lifeguard nazis are whistle blowing all day over next to nothing. Personal accountability is a thing of the past. Let the ocean wash them away, and God can sort 'em out!

Damn salt, you can't even bodysurf at swimming beaches there?

Sad about the dude, but I mean it's just natural selection really. I also would be willing to place a small wager that alcohol was involved.

The ocean is a place where if you go beyond your limits/abilities, it's a little bit easier to die. Sometimes it just happens. Little 3-4 ft windswell this weekend and there must've been at least 5 rescues...it boggles me mind. The guy coulda just had a heart attack too.

LBCrew, I like your reparations idea.

Pleasant, warm water, waist high, windswell days are the worst for saves. If there is a hurricane, or if the ocean looks "angry," everyone suddenly has respect. But, if the sky is clear and the water is blue, everyone feels safe and acts stupid.

Cep, are you differentiating Bennies and Shoobies?

For all you non-Jersey types here you go:

A Benny is a tourist in North Jersey. Don't know the origin of the term. I think I used to, but....

A Shoobie is a tourist in South Jersey. Ha, I do know this story. The term originates from day-trippers bringing their lunch in shoe boxes, hence the term Shoobie...Shoe Box turns into Shoobie.

There, you southern guys learned something aboot New Jersey today.

( ......a comet appears.....) THE MORE YOU KNOW..........

The beaches aren't that great in NJ or NY. I would just rather be at a NJ beach. Have you been to Jones Beach, Rockaway and Long Beach. They are **** holes unless you like the city vibe. No thanks. Hamptons and Montauk is nice. You just have to share the surf with pretentious ****s.

Benny is a northern NJ/NY tourist that comes down south. It comes from the acronym B-E-N-NY, or Brooklyn, Elizabeth, Newark, New York.

    Now cue the comet.

On a totally related matter. All of our idols fall.....

Jared, the dude from SUBWAY might be in some trouble. You know the dude who lost tons of pounds by eating subs, hoagies heroes......all day or seomthing. Oh and walk, gotta walk too. Walking is fun if you are high enough.

After getting cleaned-up I ate a lot. But I dropped them pounds by always walking to my oval supply. And then walking home. I did that for a while and it worked. Plus, ahh you don't really need much food on ovals. You know what I am saying.

    Why, Jared, why?

I've been forced into surfing guarded beaches more in the past two summers. It bothers me beyond belief when I get a whistle blown at me to move into a surf zone that is way too crowded when there is hardly anyone in the water besides surfers. I'm up in NH so the water is hypothermic 90% of the time. A swimmer can't really swim in the ocean for more than a five minutes so they just chill in knee deep water.

A lifeguard should be able to take exception to the rule when someone who has more ocean experience than them gets in the water. I am in complete control of my craft and surf responsibly. Plus I am an additional line of defense if a person gets taken out in a rip.

There should be a waiver application process to have the responsible and advanced surfers working together with guards in these areas. Everyone would be safer and happier.

well said lbcrew, same shyt iv been saying for years.surfers should be excluded from paying, but regular folks need lifeguards to keep them on their toes when things get sketchy.and yea I wouldn't be surprised if it was alcohol related.i just wish people would educate themselves before jumping in the water.they are hot, they go for a quick dip,get pulled one way, start panicking and end up drowning.its really sad,it really is.and its not like there were big waves when that happened, maybe 2ft waves at the max I believe because I was thinking about going surfing but thought it aint worth it.
