Agree...that was a really good read. He was one of my favorites as well...when he made his 1999 comeback, it was like a miracle had taken place...although with the clarity of hindsight, Kelly's tour hiatus that year probably helped.

Survive is a great description for how he got through that time. The article talks about how he took a $40K cash advance on his Billabong American Express card to buy cocaine, and the next time they saw him he was down about 30lbs. **** man, its a wonder he had anything left in the tank at all, let alone enough to muster a world championship run.

They compare what he survived to what killed Andy. Also amazing how similar those two guys were.

i read about his coke addiction in an old surfer mag many years ago.kind of mad how they put him on blast.

but in reality, the best surfers of all time had rough times from Kelly to andy.kellys pops was a drunk,go figure lol,not that big of a deal.too many surfers to think of,mind is cloudy roght now.everyone thought tom carrol was a superfreak fitness nut when in reality he was a meth head.people think how do they get like this.well when its the 80s,early 90s,ur 20 yrs old, have more cash than u can ever spend,u start doing drugs.everyone from sports to rockstars.times are different know, lol they drug test in the tennis surf league.

don't really remember the andy shyt,it was a while ago,but I think what killed him was mixing Xanax with methadone.I don't know why he was on methadone, nobody does, unless he was really a fiend.never mix xanies with opiates,I seen a special about that lol, dope slows ur heart down, and the xanys tell ur brain to slow ur heart down,so ur heart aint beating right and it stops.ppl die everyday tho

I loved the story of Occ's first trip to the North Shore. Derrick Doerner slapped Occ in the face in the lineup at Pipe, and 10 minutes later Ken Bradshaw bit a piece of the rail of young Occ's board off and spit it at him, then proceeded to tell him to get the **** out of the line up. When Occ got back to the beach, Eddie Aikau told him to paddle back out and tell Ken that Eddie sent you.

Being in that element back then is probably why he is one of the best announcers on the tour these days.

Occ admits in the article that Kelly was not on tour that year. There's also a cool story in there about how he faced Sunny Garcia at Pipe Masters and there was pressure on him from the Hawaiins to throw the contest and let Sunny win, as Sunny was a win away from winning the world title. Before the contest, Ben Aipa, who was Sunny's coach at the time told Occ not to let Sunny win and he ended up beating him and losing in the finals to Kelly.
