I worked at an umbrella stand 4 summers in a row, by far the best beach job. June-August if you at a good street you will make good tips plus a commission off all the equipment rented out. Get a good tan, and surf before and after work everyday if there are waves. When its not busy you can take a nap. Lifeguards have to stay alert all day long and put up with dumb tourists that can't swim. Plus if it ends up raining all day, you get the day off.
lifeguards arent gay, just cuz they tell you to move doesnt mean theyre gay. a lot of them are surfers anyway so dont be hating homie
The bigger kook you are the more succesful you'll be. Avid surfing is a hinderance to any profession, but sitting on the beach all day babysitting bathing shoobie-kooks while keeping experienced local waterman out of the ocean has to be the lamest f-ing job for a surfer ever. Unless perhaps your lifeguarding at Pipeline or something and actually helping surfers out.

I was wondering why I have had no friends the past 6 years....all along I thought I had an odor problem! Thank god for this thread! I am free! Let me guess salty........ you tried out to be a guard but couldnt swim further than 100 yards without your surfboard so you gave up, then you went to the local town pool, tried out there, but couldnt hold your breath under water for longer than 30 secs so you failed that too, now you just hate life?
this thread is old... ...but I love it! Fighting over a "Gay lifeguard?" Wow. You lifeless people. I get paid $15.00 per hour. I check the surf all day. I am in better shape then anyone on this forum. I will pull in deeper then you. I get paid to compete. I get paid to train. I get paid to surf. I get paid to surf. I get paid to be on the ocean all day. But of course, I chose a beach that allows for such an experience. The shoobies and kooks is what gives ME THE GREATEST JOB EVER! If everyone ripped like you pacsun posers that talk SH!T all day there would be no need for the fittest babysitters one can find! Lifeguarding looks good on the resume. It says more then you will ever know. You don't have to guard to be a watermen...but it can introduce the right variables if you are in with the right crew. Most of the Delaware crews have it down. Some still suck. I know some Jersey crews who play host to some of the best surfers on the east coast. Whatch your mouths people. You never know when you will need a lifeguard. Every one's time WILL COME!
I have no issue with lifeguards (except for the douchie ones). Just like cops (except the douchie ones), they are there for an important reason. People like to talk **** about them but as soon as they need help, who do they call? I don't like being told what to do by lifeguards, so I surf where they don't guard or when they're not on duty. For the general public, they are important and necessary. Not everyone is as intelligent or at ease in the water as we are. I wouldn't ever rule out getting into trouble myself out there, but I'll take the risk. Most people don't want to take any risks and would rather have someone watching over them. I don't know why people need to bicker over it. Honestly, I don't understand most of the negativity on here, but everyone has freedom of speech. If I could be away from my desk job more often, I wouldn't be talking about surfing - I'd be doing it! Everyone chill.

No surfer would ever be a lifeguard...i find that hard to believe. I dont understand why everyone has to hate on the lifeguards. THERES NO WAVES IN THE SUMMER ANYWAY!!! Go surf somewhere real. Everyone on here can "pull in deeper than you" and can do this and that so much better. Everyone was a kook at one point in time. This whole im so much better than you attitude on here is really annoying. Stop hating on everyone and everything someone has to say.
