Hypto krypto has a better range and is a healthy all rounder if you're looking for a 1 board quiver. I would also say the same thing as the Von Sol shadow...if you're into more of a fish experience... As for the WD2, buddy had one....was a fun board but didn't have the low end of the other two boards...great daily driver but not something you would grovel with...
The boards in my local shop that I saw that would float me are the wd2,mini driver, and the el tormentor.
After this board I get, I'll be looking into a cheap groveler, so it doesn't have to be a grovel board. The other 2 choices I have are the mini driver and el tormentor.
I think the meat cleaver is the all around /lower end board to have for the eastcoast, then step up to the dreamcatcher. If you want a pure groveler, go 3DF to boot. Full quiver totally complete. This is my soon to be quiver.
Roberts is based in Ventura, CA, so shipping a custom all the way to the east coast it going to add an extra $100 or so...and your gonna have to wait a couple months to receive it. imo, out of all your choices, the WD2 is the best option.
thanks, im going to make a call to a different shop tomorrow and if they dont have the board im going to go with the wd2.

afaik, there are at least two levels of "groveler". On the lowest end (something like the Lost couch potato, Pyzel rat skull, etc), you have a board w/ full rails that will trim/glide in tiny weak surf, yet can still be pumped for speed and skashed off the tail. The rocker on these boards are usually so flat, they want to pearl when turning in anything with a steep wall. On the higher end (boards like the Roberts white diamond, etc), you get more of a shortboard w/ medium rails that basically doesn't trim or glide in really weak mush. You have to pump them for any speed in small waves...or the board will bog. imo, Roberts doesn't make any grovelers for the extreme low end. Even his Mush Machine and Mutant have HP features that don't allow them to just trim w/ no input. The upside is they can handle a steeper wall, on the occasion when it presents itself. The white Diamond and wd2 are grovelers...they're just higher end grovelers. Do not fall for the "one board quiver" hype...there is no such thing.
The 3df ,mush machine, mutant, and diamond fish, are all grovel boards. They just perform well in better conditions too.
This. If you want to surf one board all the time, great. But its not a quiver its just a board. If you get a higher performance shortboard, then your one board will be perfect when its firing and not so good when its mushy. Get a low end grovel board like the couch potato/rat skull etc. and it will be the opposite. Great in weak waves but not what you'll want to be riding next winter when its 6 foot and barrelling. The middle of the road shapes like the WD2 fall right in the middle...great in small-medium but you wont be flying down the line on knee high waves, and will be a handfull on overhead bombs.
im planning on getting a small wave board or a groveler soon. what do you think of a meat cleaver and a couch potato or something like that.
If you have a local shop that sells Roberts, they can probably handle a custom order for you and if you get in with one of their shop orders, they will basically absorb the shipping cost. I met Robert on his recent East Coast tour and ordered a The Lip model (basically a more foiled out, squash tail WD2). My local shop ordered a few more boards at the same time so we could fill a box and the turn around should be about a month and a bit total (we'll see). For a total groveler, as other have said, you probably want something more like a Bottom Feeder or similar. My Bottom Feeder works great in everything from about thigh high to chest high as long as it's not too steep. Smaller than that I'll sit on the beach or get out a log. Ordered the Lip for those days when there are chest high sets and a little more push but not really powerful enough for something like my Mini Driver (which is very much NOT a groveler, it needs a wave with some curve). Hope that helps
