I remember a common complaint about 40-50 years ago from the "enlightened" community that it was totally unsafe to eat certain ocean fish because they were so heavily tainted with mercury.

Yet, here we are today...and our life spans have increased dramatically. Granted, this is only one example of empirical data...but I can pull out many more if necessary.

    My theory is this:

    a) Either many of us are being overly paranoid about science and technology, and/or
    b) The human biology is akin to cockroaches, i.e., our systems become tolerant to lower toxicity levels and eventually mutate. A form of "evolution", if you will.

^you're actually implying adaptation, not evolution

Well, you have to keep in mind that the amount of mercury being released to the ocean is presently much lower than in times past, at least from the USA. So there is a lot less in the food chain for you to consume as the top predator. But...can you please tell me...what the hell is that red strip running up your back every time the ambient temperature rises..????
As for many being paranoid about science...true....and I think we should give it a term to define it....we should name that paranoia "Gorenoia", after that abject moron who used to be VP.

Thanks Grain, you're probably "more" correct...but really, isn't it just semantics? Adaptation is probably one many steps in the evolutionary process.

    But, I digress.

Squirrels know what's good for them. Of course they have no concern for job creators. They must hate 'Merka!

In the words of Ian Malcolm
“They're both technicians. They have what I call 'thintelligence'. They see the immediate situation. They think narrowly and they call it 'being focused'. They don't see the surround. They don't see the consequences.”

Look at cancer and all that has be attributed to its causes (cigarettes, cow's milk etc). The Population is still growing. Not saying it's right, nor am I saying there will not be consequences to GMOs.

Trial and error. Humans tend to F things up more often than not.

So, Why GMOs at all? Is it just capitalism/greed? Look what DuPont did with synthetics to push natural resources out of the market....that was all politics and big biz. But, we use their products/materials on the daily. GMOs will be the same. There will be some "boutique" farmers that will continue to provide non-GMO products and they will charge a premium for it.

For real. Facts never seem to get in the way of a good conspiracy theory.

poison can also retard one, as demonstrated above. Keep them stupid, keeps them compliant. Hey Brushilla I saw a vid about you and yours. You're what they call a meatpuppet, aren't you? that's like a sockpuppet but loves the meat. Just kidding. I think. I might be wrong. I'm not one to be sure of anything,

    except your responses.

Fact: Through the root system, plants, bushes, vines, and trees absorb whatever is in the soil they grow in, and whatever accumulates on the exterior of the organism itself. This natural absorption process is not limited to nutrients only, and includes toxic poisons.

Fact: Genetically modified organisms (GMO) in the food industry are specifically designed to withstand herbicides, and pesticides that are used to KILL everything but the GMO itself in order to produce higher yields.

Fact: Herbicides, and pesticides are toxic poisons designed to KILL living organisms. You are a living organism that has not been modified to withstand these toxic poisons.

Fact: Cancer, and other potentially negative effects on your health will not always reveal themselves the moment you eat something poisonous. Additionally, health issues will not come with a label indicating where, and when they came from.

man that is on point Doug in theory. what about 1874 and the year of the Locust? Ever tried to grow organic garden yourself. I have nearly cried ( not really but really pissed) when your garden gets infested and you harvest very little....luckily I was able to cruise down to the Food Lion and get some fresh veggies.

I don't know man. Cancers seem to be one step ahead of us...maybe because we keep "teeing it up" with these "modifications" of nature.

I would certainly prefer to live like the our ancestors did but that ain't happening. Thankfully we still have choices. I could see this world spiral into famine in the matter of weeks under the right conditions. I still think the population growth will see its last straw!

I think we can all agree that when we paddle out and duck dive that first wave and strive for the peak that we quickly feel a since of freedom from all the sh*t this world is full of.

So since 28 people came down with dengue in Key West in 2009-2010, and there are a reported 2.5 million visitors to the island, it calls for a new species to control?

I can understand scientific advancement, but in my opinion the math here doesn't support what could be and "ecological disaster."
