In addition to wild mustangs, this barrier island in the southern Outer Banks used to be home to a world-class shore break. The setup, seen here, was extremely fickle, only breaking a handful of days each year. “Boat access only,” says photographer Matt Lusk. “No roads or houses. Unfortunately, the island has been eroding over the last several years, prompting the Army Corps of Engineers to pump sand onto the outer bars, making this wave a thing of the past.”

i'm going to be honest with you here. this spot died a slow death a long time ago. my first trip here i witnessed the absolute grotesque face of despair that is known as shack. it's sad really.

sure it was good at one time or whatever but not now. first, there is only one peak, maybe two that break on the whole island. you must think 'no way that's possible".... well, it is. i fvcking promise you. second, it gets crowded as fvck. like malibu on aids with brazilian etiquette crowds. people dropping in, intentional burns, sups, kayaks, canoes, and kids in red t-shirts that pretend they are somebody. full on Mexican donkey show disgusting.

Whatever. Protecting homes and infastructure really is more important than a surf break.

Sounds like a waste of money to pump it then. Don't think I know enough to comment any further.

Well, there ya go short-eyes: finally. Stick to that approach whenever you have a giddy notion that you want to post on SI.

Not trying to be disrespectful but considering all the fun, uncrowded, drive-up and park surf spots on that particular string of barrier islands, is the destruction of one overcrowded, boat-only access fickle spot really that tragic?

    keyword: barrier

If this glorified sandbar gets taken out to sea, whatever ignorant forms of construction on the other side of it will be on the next plane out.

Never bothered with Shack. Had some friends who were locals there (the guy's Dad was the mayor of AB) and they never bothered with it either. We'd just keep going and go to the cape. They told me the same thing, the break sucks and it's an idiot\aggro fest whenever it breaks.

You shouldn't comment on anything. You have the lowest IQ on this site. Lay off the booze and keep some of your brain cells.

Save the mustangs. Spend millions on sand pumping to save the mustangs.
