Hello Swellinfo. I need some thoughts/advice. I've been lurking for over a year now and have enjoyed the humor this site provides while I sit confined to my cube. I don't expect to base my decision entirely on how this thread goes, of course, but some input from surfers would be pretty helpful.

I currently live and work in Washington D.C. For a long time I was dating a girl in Ocean City, so I was able to spend most of my weekends there surfing, etc. We've since broken up and thus my surf pad no longer exists in OC. I've been able to make some camping and day trips to Assateague, but it's a 3-hour drive one-way and pretty exhausting.

I have two potential job opportunities: one in Philadelphia and one in Wilmington, NC. The one in Philly is probably a better opportunity in terms of salary and career development. The one in Wilmington, NC is good bit less pay and the benefits aren't as great, but the thought of living in a cool southern city with easy access to surf is very appealing.

Most people I've talked with tell me the Philly opportunity is the one I should be going with--but they don't surf. An 1:00-1:15 drive to southern Jersey (which I've never surfed) is a huge improvement, but the thought of a 15 minute drive in NC (with warmer water and better-looking women) is just really hard for me to ignore.

So any advice any of you guys can offer will be pretty helpful and offer some surfers' perspectives on the matter. Is living in Philly and traveling out to southern Jersey doable? I'd probably be relegated to weekend trips, sick days, etc. in Philly, though, whereas in Wilmington I could get in the water pretty much any day before/after work...?

Thanks a lot -- appreciate any thoughts you guys can offer. And if it helps, I'm 27.

I've lived in both Wilmington NC area and Philly area though I've lived in South Jersey most of my life. You can take the job in Philly and live in Marlton, NJ or thereabouts and be in LBI in about an hour or less depending upon what day it is. Only about 30 minutes to your job in the city. Don't live in the city. Philly will eat you alive. PM a guy on here named Riley Martin, he can tell where to score.

make sure your factor in the 4% city wage tax, highest in country. Also, parking is at a premium, expect to pay at least $100-200 a month for that. If you're not going to live in center city then it's not worth living in Philly and paying the tax. If you live in PA burbs and work in philly the. You pay 3.5% city wage tax plus local tax of whatever town you live in. If you live in jersey and commute into Philly for work, you're doublely f*cked....you pay 3.5% plus jersey's income tax and tolls and ****.

Wilmington cost of living is cheaper. Traffic can really suck. Get a place by the beach and commute back to wilmy. 1/2 hour drive from Wrightsville or Crusty Beach. about 12 miles but at times traffic will hold you up big. Draw bridges, tourons, college kids...
It's a pretty cool city... and the water is much warmer than NJ.
My experience in Philly is extremely limited.

Wages and Cost of Living is relative. Wages are much higher in cities like San Diego, Seattle and Philly...but so is the cost of living. Alternatively, wages and cost of living are commensurate when living in a smaller town.

My personal experience is having lived in both, my bottom line has been pretty much equal. It kinda takes money out of the equation...unless being able to tell others that you make "6 figs" or boast about your job title is important to you.

"Quality of Life" should be a driving factor in one's decision about such things. Philly has so much culture and history and all the perks that go along with residing in a major metropolis. OTOH, large cities have big downsides (traffic, population etc) which contribute to stress levels and an overall poorer quality of life.

But man...Wilmington. That town really has a lot going for it (college, girls, college girls, surf, laid-back lifestyle). One might not initially make as much money, but could make it up after residing there for a few years. You have to admit, the quality of life just seems like it would be a better fit.

    Just my .02 cents

That sounds about right. Make sure that job is solid because the job market here is ROUGH. That is, unless you have an in with the old plantation money that seems to run this area. I sold cars for a while after college before I got a decent opportunity.

I grew up in MD, Annapolis area, and the COL here is wayy lower. I bought a house last year, wouldn't have been able to do that in MD.

    Hey, I'm 27 too!

Both areas have there pros and cons as far as surfing goes.

Personally I love surfing in NC but I could understand that they might not get as consistent and as juicy waves- as say Belmar. But then nJ has cold water- and jersey vibe. But then again- the line ups in winter are pretty empty.

So either place you will get good waves.

If your 27 and would like to have a family one day- then this is a good time to make a go decision based on your career goals. Remember rtoo that the price of living is wayyyyy cheaper in nc. Take that into account.

Also- if you do the philly thing- find a place to live between work and your a good surf break- that hour drive will get old someday...

All about your future prospects man. If you lose your job in Wilmington do you think you can find another one soon? I know some tech guys that live in Wilmington and have the luxury of working from home, and the real office is thousands of miles away. If they lose their job they have options of doing the exact same thing with another company. If your options are limited if you lost your job in Wilm, you might want to think hard about the other option in Philly.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and input! It's all been really helpful, and I'll try to respond to some of the frequent notes:

On the Wilmington job market, future security & prospects, etc.: The job in Philly is a federal job while the one in Wilmington would be a state gig. The federal benefits (I'm a current Fed, as well) are pretty great, while the NC state benefits aren't quite as nice. I have a non-serious health condition that requires frequent bloodwork, so the extra healthcare costs in NC could prove to be fairly substantial (if I'm reading the cost breakdowns correctly). I've also heard that the NC state budgetary/political environment is not the most stable. What are the odds that my position would get cut after a year? I'm not sure, but as I've been looking for jobs in Wilmington for quite some time, I can also attest to the job market not exactly being full of opportunities.

On the cost-of-living differences: I've factored that into my salary statements--Philly's salary is a decent bit higher than Wilmington.

On the quality of life: If I could have the same job in either position, it'd be a pretty easy decision to head to Wilmington. Like most of us, I much prefer the warmer weather and water. And easy beach access. The thought of being able to get in the water on any given day is just... yeah.

In my present state of mind, I'm leaning towards Wilmington. But, I don't want to -- a year or two down the road -- find myself in a situation where I turned down a good opportunity for career development to take a (admittedly less-interesting) job so I could be closer to waves (and especially if the job ends up not being stable). Maybe I could do a tour in Philly, drive an hour or so to surf (again, a big improvement over DC), and after a couple of years turn that experience into an even better job in a coastal city? But, as always, the best laid plans...

I guess I've ventured into the present vs. future awards arena: i.e., life. I've always tended to suffer through unideal circumstances (which is how I've found myself living in D.C.) in hopes of a better living/work situation down the road... The Lennon/Saunders quote "Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans" seems to describe me pretty well, for better or worse.

Again, I greatly appreciate all of your thoughts!

If you are smart, whatsitgonnabe, the solution is dancing in front of your face. Philly is very expensive when all things considered. Wilmington is cheaper. So, take the Wilmington job, THEN....start an investment program, BUILD a sizable savings in stocks and bonds, and soon enough your investment returns will exceed any pay and expenses you would have in Philly. You income should be higher than Philly job as times passes. BUT!!! that depends how loyal and disciplined you are to allocating funds RELIGIOUSLY to your investment plan. Plan it, then work it--no excuses. Re-invest your dividends and interest so you get an upward spiral in investments. Keep it up until you retire. It worked for me.
In no time at all, you will be happy you did so. Good luck.

If it is a state NC job then take it. We just had a $400 million budget surplus so I don't think layoffs are coming. I might be wrong but it is more stable then some corp job.

Well, first off: you've demonstrated that you belong here just by seeking the Wisdom of the Swellies.

SI Forum is the premier place to turn for medical analysis, career counseling & advice on how to keep your virginity intact if you go to prison. Although MIS thing can attest to how he lost his in prison; lesson learned, as MISthing says, never bend over for that bar of soap in the communal shower.

In any event, heed what hese buoys speaketh. Sounds like Wilmington is the clear choice.
