i live in wilmington and my parents live on wrightsville beach (this will be important later). this is a great area with lots of young ppl thanks to uncw. the cost of living is low and hot young college girls to soccer mom milfs are littered everywhere.

now the downside. professional employment is hard to come by. you will be competing with every other person from all over the state and county (who surprise, just like you) want to live near the coast. which is probably why we have so many 40 year old waiters who surf masonboro every time there are waves.

paying to park on wrightsville is a huge gripe that most ppl have. i'm lucky enough to have a spot to park at my parents place. if i didn't i would probably loose my mind or go surf another beach.

it can get crowded in the line up. frustratingly crowded with all types. despite the crowd the mood is usually friendly and relaxed.

Either way you choose (and based on the lineup's input as well as my own life experiences), you're still young enough at age 27 to "start over" if you ever needed to. My vote would be take the risk and go for Wilmington. If in 3 or 4 years it's not working out or isn't what you thought it would be you'lre still young enough to make a change. This is epecially true since you are unencumbered with the marriage ball-and-chain and all that entails. Finally you won't have the regret at age 40 or 45 of what it might've been like to take that job in Wilimington and experience a more desirable lifestyle.

Sounds like swellinfo.com's counselor are opting for NC....lol

Maybe you should take a quick trip to both... NC is very sweet- I used to travel there for work years ago... Always brought my board and stayed a few extra days and tried to time it with a swell. Loved that place- many great memories. It seems a lot busier last I was there compared to the first time 15 yrs ago- but the same is true for nj.

The Tard has some great points- he usually doesn't even say that much- so this info is important.

Plus that guy mid life cruise guy had some good input- your at a point when you could turn around in a year.

I think another bit of advise I could provide from things I have learned - is family. Is your family (parents /bro/sis) closer to nj or nc? When I was younger- I moved out and far away rather quickly. It wasn't such a big deal at the time- but now I understand how hard it is when you have your own family and would like to visit ect and you learn how important family really is...

If that isn't a factor- I would really lean toward NC. Maybe even live in topsail to avoid all the wrightsville beach craziness (paying to park, crowds ect) although I have no clue how the waves are there

You didn't mention having dependents, so I would definitely listen to your heart. Once you have spouse & kids you will have the rest of your life to base decisions on what is best for them (but even then, there is a lot more to quality of life than the so-called smart career move.)
One of the mags rated UNC Wilmington the top college for surfers, FWIW. I've visited - it's beautiful.
On the other hand my friend from PA calls Philly "the city of brotherly shove".
I'd go to NC myself, and commit to living on 90% of my means... your future financial success depends a lot more on what you keep than it does on what you earn.

Really appreciate all the responses. It's not only been helpful to get the opinions of other surfers, but also from people who have lived at one or both locations. I was hesitant to post my situation on here, but I'm glad I did. I've frequently found myself looking through the "Should I move to...?" threads as I've contemplated my own potential wanderings, so hopefully this thread will also help anyone in the future facing a similar decision. A few things still have to fall into place for both of the jobs/locations, but I will try to post an update once I figure something out, should that day ever occur. Thanks again, Swellinfo!
