Yeah, both my parents have worked in education their entire lives. They do pay in, and teachers are the last people that deserve a salary or pension cut. Teachers are underpaid for the sh1t they put up with. More money needs to go into getting better teachers (or continuous training of the good teachers we have) and paying them what they deserve.

Sounds like the only crybaby are those who refuse to work and want everything for free. In his state, he did in fact end a lot of that. NJ will be better off as time rolls on. My view is this--you don't want to work?? Starve then.

Presently, most teachers are not worth 1/4 of the pay they get.

I disagree with that. I am pretty sure I have more experience here, as well. My dad is a superintendent for a county. He does complain about a few teachers, but 90% are good caring educators.

So a little bit of good makes up for all the bad? Corruption and abuse of power make him a sh1t politician. Forcing a few people to work does not wash away those sins.

Come teach for a while, Barry. I'm getting ready to go film thirty-six kids in a movie project. This will be my easiest class of the day. It will be fun, but it's on par with herding cats.
    You, sir, are a moron.

    o barry.

If I didn't think you were just trolling I would award this post as the most moronic statement ever posted on SI.

Supporting a fat shameless farkwad like Christy is a close second though.

Fine. They you can pay. We should vote who contributes to pensions. It's only fair unless you want to contribute to my 401k. I think current teachers and police can have their pensions but new hires don't get a pension. They have a 401k where taxpayers will match up to 10%.

supers are the worst in NJ. Sometimes 5 of them for an area and they have a huge salary. Cut it down to 1, end pensions and end tenure. Tenure holds no teachers accountable and they can be **** teachers and still keep their job. Cops are way worse retiring at 40 with pensions and then getting another government job with a pension. Double dipping shouldn't be allowed and the minimum retirement age for tax payed jobs should be 60. The whole system is corrupt. A cop who just has to give traffic tickets in a nice town retiring on a pension and he can't even count to 4.

I do pay, and I am guessing I pay more than you. Teachers are employees of the state. Our taxes pay for their salary, and our taxes help with their pension (they contribute as well). Same situation with my privately owned non-profit company. My pension and 401k is partially paid by them, and I also pay in a percentage. I am sorry your employer doesn't offer a pension, though I am sure your company contributes to your 401k. Even if they don't, that doesn't give you the right to take away pensions for state workers as you see fit.

The only ones that don't have to pay are Brewshillas masters. He gets his under the table from them, tax free.

My dad is the sole superintendent for the entire county. He only makes $15k more than I do, and he has almost 40 years in the school district. He also has the most stress and responsibility out of anyone in the education system. Teachers are held accountable, and they use standardized test scores as part of the overcheck. I can't speak for the system in NJ, but the school districts I am familiar with mostly face financial issues. These issues limit training and resources that help the teachers do their jobs. It also tends to allow less qualified teachers in the door.

Pensions that are taxpayer funded and based on top annual earnings/salary versus 401k plans with a company match are two entirely different conversations.

The best example of how pensions (guaranteed) wreck balance sheets is the Post office. Many muni's are underfunded because of these pension guarantees. Also, looking at Public pensions versus private (some companies still offer), there is a stark difference in the solvency....Private typically much more healthy when compared to muni's or gov't. Shoot, there are many gov't workers who have a pension and a 403b.

Teachers tenure is the real issue. I have no problem paying them more for performance not tenure. It is nearly impossible to fire a teacher for performance....who wants that for their children?

I gotta side with liam on the point about pension versus 401k. The way pensions are calculated for gov't workers is absurd. Give them a plan that is matched and match is capped. I could agree with a 10% match for police, FF, teachers.
