Hey guys, any of you have not so perfect vision? I wear glasses for distance and it's fine on land but figured I'd look into contacts just for while I'm in the water. So what I'm really asking is does anyone on here wear contacts in the ocean and is it well worth it?
Me too. Open my eyes under water all the time and no problems. THe only issue I've ever had is getting hit in the face by the lip while trying to get barreled and lost a contact. Drive home was a b!tch.
Always carry at least one spare lens or if you don't have a spare make sure to bring your glasses just in case. Is it worth it? Well that depends on how bad your vision is. I couldn't surf without my contacts, but I'm freakin' blind.
I use daily disposables when I surf... and I've never lost one. But when I surfed with my expensive multi-focus... lost about fitty bucks worth! I'm pretty blind too, tried surfing with one contact and had zero depth perception. took a bunch on the head before getting out and replacing the missing eye...
I wear Rx Sea Specs which are sunglasses made for surfing, boating etc. they totally work. So, if your eyes can't tolerate contact lenses, check them out.
Any problem with water spots? I've tried "water sun goggles" for DP to cut the glare but the water spray on them drove me crazy...
What all these guys said about contacts...been doing it no problemme since 8th grade. I use dailys now, especially in warmer water temps.
+1 on the daily lenses. I buy them exclusively for recreation and have zero complaints. Can't recommend opening your eyes under water though.
I use 2 week disposables... I have had one wash out .. can happen on a big day in the wash cycle soup. That is why I keep a set of spectacles in the vehic for the drive home.
I got contacts over a year ago after wearing nothing at all the previous 19 years of surfing and I wish I had gotten them a long time ago. It's a game changer for sure. Get monthly lenses for out of water and daily disposable for when you surf, won't be mad if you lose one. Keep a spare in the vehicle just in case. You'll be glad you did.
Awesome guys, thanks for the replies. I was worried about them washing out as well but Im going to go for it.
I was supposed to get glasses like 20yrs ago lol.i can see fine, just cant see distance.like reading words on the bottom of the tv,cant do it.driving at night is the worst, everyone gets scared when they drive with me at night,i blow through stop signs, take the wrong turns, hit a speedbump doing 40 one day, thought the car split in half.but il eventually get glasses when I cant see 3ft infront of me
for my prescription, there's only two brands of contacts I can wear that have UV blocking...unfortunately, they're both flimsy and the materials are just frail, in general. They last about 2 days in the ocean before salt corrodes them to the point I can barely even see out of them. I used to get the Precision UV brand (discontinued) and they were nice and thick. When splashed with water, they stayed on my eyes better and I could re-use them in the ocean for about a month before I detected any degradation.
On my board, I am able to get by without eyeglasses. At first (3 years ago when I started surfing) it was very uncomfortable. But I adapted. In my younger years and through college, I needed glasses for reading only. After college and while in the Navy, I noticed a significant deterioration in my vision. Nevertheless, I was still able to go fishing, sailing, windsurfing, and SCUBA diving without eye glasses. But three years ago at age 57 when I took up surfing, I found it difficult to do anything without glasses. My vision had further deteriorated that much. Going without glasses took awhile to get used to. I can't distinguish faces well when out on the water and tend to recognize other surfers by their boards or cars. Based on what I've read here, perhaps I should give contacts a try and and wear them while surfing; but I'm just not ready yet to take that step. I've seen vids of blind people surfing but have a hard time understanding how and why a blind person would want to do that. .
I wear contacts when it's huge or dark overcast/rainy. The rest of the time, I wear cheap prescription sunglasses that I order online from Zenni Optical, held on with one of those Croakies lanyard straps. I'm just too nearsighted to go bare eyed.
Awesome!! So how do you pass the vision test for your driver's license? Or do you just drive without one?
