welcome to the 2015-2016 SI Forum Members "Hard Core Cold Water Surfer" competition! Disclaimer: not sponsored by Swell Info. Disclaimer #2, I am not very hard core. Here is how to play: as you surf this winter season, note the water temp and air temp when you were out per your local NBDC buoy. Add them together that's your score. If you are lower than the current leader, post it. (Do not factor wind chill ... I know it's a huge factor in comfort, but we are keeping it simple, soldier.) Other details - buoy number, winds, gruesome photos, trash talk ... all are welcome. But The Score's The Thing. (I know most of us can't resist responding to trash talk, but let's kind of try to limit the thread to the posting of scores. Or at least, scores and REALLY clever responses.) *Here's an interesting fact, Normie... the ocean temps lag the astronomical seasons by about 2 months. So if the summer solstice is June 21-ish, the atmosphere is warmest a month later, and the ocean is at it's warmest around late August. Conversely, this competition will really get down to brass tacks around Groundhogs day. Any Floridians want to set the bar for us? Might be your only chance to participate - I know your spirit is hard core, but geography and the Gulf Stream are stacked solidly against you.
^ says the guy averaging a post a day for 6 years. Sorry Barry Cuda I thought this was a surfing forum and some people might want to actually talk about surfing. My bad.
Yeah that's me, what's your point? I wasn't taking a shot at you or being sarcastic, just saying no point in FL participating in a cold water contest.
sorry DPS I accidentally came in under you, I was "pointing" at Barry Cuda and please note I named him in my edit. My bad for not doing a Reply With Quote. Peace.
sisurfdog you may not win this competition but you have succeeded in making me want to move. 160 is on the Big Board Mr Costanza. OK Barry Cuda - you got me. Peace.
No worries, I'll be glad to report when it actually is worth reporting, say anything below 60 degree air and below 70 degree water. Even then it's colder everywhere north of here haha
I like this idea...a former member who hates winter surfing would hate it. I'll play once it actually starts to get cold...G-Wood be sure to bump if it drops down.
air 44.8 water 51.3 total 96.1 (Sorry southerners, I know I proposed we northerners hold off for a few weeks to let you guys at least get a couple ... but as I noted I am not hardcore, not sure how many sessions I have left for this year (if any)...)
Sounds like your surfing is done on Labor Day. You do know, of course, after that day wearing white slacks is totally not preppie of you. Very classless to do so.....
I'm popping my preppie collar up in Maine (buoy 44doubleOh7 represent!) I used to go out year round, back before kids, but not so much anymore. Come Jan or Feb, if it is cold enough for pond hockey I take that as a sign from God and lace 'em up. I'll probably get out a couple more times before I yield to the truly hard core this year. This morning was small but beautiful ... I love it when you are on dawn patrol and the wave behind you eclipses the sun for a split second right before you catch it.
Our local waters rarely make it out of the 50's year-round here, but occasionally dip into the 40's in winter...air temps rarely below freezing, but hovers around the 40's and low 50's during winter. Not very warm, but nothing too crazy.
