Sad. A surfer was found on the beach this morning at Swamis still strapped to his broken board.
Kenneth Mann was 61 years young.
We can only speculate the cause of death.
This hits close. Too many surfers, including myself these days, don't surf with the buddy system. We all need someone to watch our back. Just in case.
Our hearts go out to his family.

Agree... I surf alone too often , specially in the winter.

Do you know where can meet some surfer friends?

Maybe offer to buy them pizza so they will surf with me?

I too, often surf by myself.
Don't take this wrong, but after what I've seen at my Dad's nursing home and what happens to some families trying to support disabled, aging parents, I think I'd rather go out the way this guy did.
I know, the guy wasn't all that old (a year older than I), but sometimes I tend to feel that longevity isn't always such a good thing.

yeah i don't like sharing the ocean... so much sometimes that i even don't go myself, just to have less people in the water.

sucks for the dude tho, looks like he could tie a hell of a knot.

We all love an uncrowned line up and being able to pick and choose what wave we want and don't want, but I really don't mind a few people around me. I kind of enjoy having others give me a "Yeeewwwww" on a set wave or cheering me on and providing the same stoke back. Just makes for a fun session. Now don't get me wrong, I don't want a crowded line up!

Towelie, as focked up as that is, that was funny! BradQuitted would be proud

My surfing history is chocked full of foolish and dangerous decisions. I always try to find a spot where there's no one. Hard to do in VB, but OBoNC and CR was where I did most of my solo therapy. Probably the the 2 spots where one could encounter negative outcomes. BUT, both times I've been severely injured was in VB.

Are you ever really alone at Swamis though?

I don't like being out alone when it's getting dark. Daylight, no problem.

I agree with Zero.In the winter especially I prefer a few people out just so I'm not the only bait in the water.

Right...I don't think I've ever seen Swarmi's with less than 20 people out, and that's when it's flat.

surfing alone is the best way to get in touch with the ocean and a particular break. When its big its sketchy, but those are the days that make you as a surfer.

I like surfing solo. You could also get hit by your buddies board or struck by lightning.
