    I used something called I-gadget.

After get the stuff off the i-pod be sure to get an external hard drive for back up. that way if a pc crashes all your stuff is not gone with it.

If it is a PC it is very simple. Plug in your iPod and make sure you change your PC folder settings to see all hidden files.

unhide hidden folders, go to ipod in the my computer, ipod control, music, and all the folders are there just copy and paste it to a folder on the computer.

Then open iTunes and point the library to where the files are and they will be renamed back to how they should be and were.

i used 2 programs as the first is a demo for free and lets you get 250 songs for free and is called copytrans control. the second is also a demo and thats called touchcopy09. i liked both and fast. i wish i could get the links for both of them but i cant but just google them.

not sure about the iPod touch, but my iPhone just syncs everything automatically when you plug in and start iTunes.
