I'm a lifer musician and I've taught for many years and I'll tell you: that chord pattern you hear here at the "chorus" of this song is quite common - especially in the asinine pop music that infests and defines our culture. In musical terms, the pattern is ii - IV - I - V ... it is heard in songs like "wonderwall" by Oasis.. "boulevard of broken buttholes" by Greenday and nearly every turd that drops out of your gay imaginary dragon friend. sorry but I've been through this so many times with students.. pop music sucks. there's so much good music out there
