FWIW, water in the PNW has been between 55-58. Some guys (mostly older) wear 5/4's with boots, gloves and hood year 'round here (I'm not one of them). They say they just like to stay warm, the gloves help them grip their boards better and don't give a hoot about shedding rubber because what others think. A lot of Seattle daytrippers do the same, but I think they do it because they just don't have a clue. YMMV
There were lots of people out in hoods in NY yesterday and I have no idea what they are going to do when it actually gets cold. Hopefully stay home. Veterans Day meant everyone in the world was in the water. Normal Wednesday would have been half as many people. Water temp is just below 60 and air temps were in the 50s. Strong offshores but still water temp is going to drop another 30 degrees, it's practically summer.
Wouldn't you rather be warm then cold...who gives a rats a** how much rubber one wears...to each his own. Surfed Wednesday, air temps chilly with a stiff offshore and someone i was surfing with was in a 3/2 was feelin the chill after a couple hours, while I was in my 4/3 toasty warm for 3+ hour session. Started wearing boots that day too, probably not necessary, but the hell with it, I hate to be cold. Tomorrow, with 30 mph winds, I will definitely sporting a hood. My ears can't take the wind, tho temps may not be to bad, but I ain't taking a chance. So mock me if you wish...I could care less....lol
this one kook at my spot was wearing a 5/4 with the hood on and the chest zipper undone during memorial day weekend 2 years ago he wore that same 5/4 during arthur, but with the hood down this time
Not mocking ya Coop, I was just surprised. People usually complain about putting on the rubber and it seems like this year people can't wait. LOL. Is there supposed to be anything tomorrow?
5/4-full + 5 mil claws & 7 mil boots - too hot, but only other op is leaky 5/3 back zip, no hood-too strapped to buy a decent 4/3 fall/spring suit Besides amount of people that haven't ditched to hit the slopes yet it was solid here yesterday...looked really big but sloppy on the cam today - one probably had to hitch a ride on the river current just to get outside
Suppose to be some surf...but stiff Offshores. Come on down to oc...hopefully that west wind doesn't beat it down quick. I to hate rubber, but I hate being cold too. I saw a guy wearing a 5 mil with hood when water had to be in mid 60's in late June. I Kinda look at him dumbfounded but hey, he seemed totally stoked out there...which was cool.
That explains it! What a relief. My arms and neck have been more sore lately as well. Thought it was because I was just gettin' old.
Headed there late morning once the tide drops. The offshores aren't going to kill this....its long period and coming from way up NE of us. a few hours of stiff offshores wont kill that kind of energy. I'm thinking the spots that pick up the ENE swell will have (inconsistent its long period) chest high sets in the morning, and barrels if the offshores aren't too strong.
Broke my 3/2 zipper (chest zip thankfully) while suiting up while it was just PUMPING and offshore this morning. Contemplated driving 6 blocks and buying a new 3/2 real quick - something I really didn't want to do. Surfed 3 hours in a 3/2 broken zipper without booties. wasn't even slightly cold...water is still over 60. That's doing pretty good for mid November for the mid Atlantic.
Not to rub it in, but I surfed 2 hours early this AM, waves were 6-8 ft faces, offshore winds, and fast. I had the right board for the day (for me, anyways), my Bessell pocket rocket, fast board. And I was out all by myself....yipppeeeeee!!!!
Allow me to assure you--the ocean will provide many more days like today--it has since the oceans came about, and will continue to do so until it dries up. And....you will be able to be in the right place many days that it does. It is your karma, man.
I don't know, Zero, there's just this sense that it is colder than it is. Also, people tend to equate November as being somewhat cold. I was out on Wednesday and 3 of the 4 others had on 5 mils/hood. I was out Friday and ..well no one else was there. I'm wearing the world's worst 5 mil. I meant to get a new 3 mil but just didn't and my 3 mil ain't like it used to be. So this 5 mil I have is totally worn and is basically a solid 3 mil. Oh don't worry Zero I have a solid 5 mil. Just don't have a solid 3 mil. Let's face it. I wear my 3 mil mostly in the summer. It's basically summer temps through October and then wang chung it turns cold. Falls usually turn from summer-like 3 mil temps (water 65-58) then drops suddenly. Spring? What is spring as far as water temps go in Jersey? Water doesn't get solidly into the mid 50's until usually mid-May. So yeah I don't really care or bother too much with 3 mils these days. I get a fair one to handle June-October. Then it's usually 5 mil time. Wed I was good(worn 5 mil, boots). Friday we had 20-30 offshores that seemed to be focused on my right ear. The surf sucked, and I actually felt cold. Don't know if boots were needed but I wear them for this trail I walk aboot. Plus they make my feet more happy in fin. Atlantic County water temp Friday I'd put at 58. Oh I hear it's 61 or 60. But that ain't 60. A man of years can tell the difference between 61 and 58.
