Well, it finally happened.

    First surf session cut short due to a legit shark sighting.

    At roughly 9 am this morning, I was out with three buddies at 41st Street in OCMD. There was another guy surfing the next peak down. I spotted what looked like a fin for a split second before a wave got in the way of my line of sight. Went over the top of the wave and was staring at about a foot tall, dark, pointy dorsal fin, 50 yards or so to the outside. It disappeared and I wasted no time telling my buddies and heading for the beach. Waves were ****e anyway. They tentatively believed me, but seemed to be waiting for a groupthink to set in that perhaps I was seeing things and the session could go on. I paddled in. The guy who was on the other peak paddles in too and he walks up to me on the beach and asks if I saw that. "The fin, you saw it too?!" "Yeah man, that was a beast, whatever it was." My buddies now see that I'm standing on the beach with the other guy who had been out, having what must have looked like a very animated conversation. They paddled in.

    Judging by googled images and general feeling, I'd say it was most likely a white shark. I got a friend studying sharks in the Mid-Atlantic for her PhD research and she said it wasn't likely to be a sandbar or sand tiger. They've all bailed south. Maybe one of Mary Lee's cousins.

    That shot of primal fear and adrenaline that kicks in is pretty wild, though...

    Just saw Mary Lee pinged in North Jerz somewhere inside an inlet...spooky time of year for the north atlantic..

    ..glad you're safe, that adrenaline spike musta been gooood.

    I was out last year around this time, just before thanksgiving, and a seal leapt out of the water maybe 15 feet from me. It was only playing. Couple other seals just cruising through the lineup - their heads would pop up and little beady black eyes would look at you. And the whiskers. They seemed so friendly. But my god, it put real fear into me. I thought for sure there was going to be a big mouth following the seal that came jumping out of the water.

    Related Question: If you pooped in your wetsuit, would you clean it or just get a new one?

    Had a close encounter with a shark in FLA last winter. Told SIsurfdog about it and he replied nonchalantly, "That will change your body chemistry".

    Not gonna lie, my last time out im sitting there on me bort...next thing ya know I see a big splash outta the corner of my eye..as if someone chucked a rock in the water...I caught the next one in like a little biddy.

    Depends on how she was tagged. Sounds like it is probably a satellite tag. Depending on marine and weather conditions, satellite tags can have wide margins of error (on the order of tens of kilometers). So, she could have been cruising just offshore but the satellite registered the ping several kms away (in the bay). That's probably why he can't confirm.
    Moored acoustic receivers tend to be more accurate as the fish has to swim near it to be picked up, so the margin of error is a lot less.

    I only saw something that scared me out of the water once. It was down by the sharky inlet, nice 4-5' hurricane swells. I didn't see a fin, just something big thrashing around in the water. I caught a wave, took a ride, then paddled back out, thinking it would be gone, but whatever it was was still there, still thrashing, so I decided it was time to call it a day. And I don't surf by that inlet anymore.

    I was surfing 35th st 8-9:30 and I could just feel the presence.. also I definitely saw some sort of very large fish thrashing/moving, but never saw the fin pop up(I thought it was just a fish or something) and got outta there about 30 mins later, cause the waves sucked, and glad that I did. I was alone out there and he was probably right under my board. see sandsharks a lot but this ones a biggie

    Was out yesterday, thought I saw some something pop out of the water, it was only the edge of a Bible. I checked to make sure my stuff was still on the beach, it was. Decided to paddle in anyway, scary sheet

    Fisherman are feeding and so are the sharks. All following the migration of stripers moving south. Main body of the migration is in south jersey with some of the leaders on DE side of the bay. Next few weeks will see the big ones, both bass and sharks off of Delmarva, yewww, cant wait.
