What is not cool, is paddling out on the most esteemed internet surf predicting forum in the entire east coast without a proper intro. Just sayin'.

If they are constantly paddle battling trying to stay furthest inside they will get dropped in on eventually. This ain't a contest share a few ****ing waves

 

There are plenty of names for them - all bad.

However if they paddled deeper into the peak than you are sitting then THEY have right of way.

Its a **** move, but doesn't change the right of way rules.

surfing isnt tennis. Its a human and nature oriented activity in a dynamic fluid environment.

if someones waiting for a wave, especially if youve watched em catcha few before you paddled out,
be humble.

Theres plenty more waves waiting for you and most likely a good session or two to be shared between you and your fellow human if you share the playing field. Giving waves is an important act of the art, just like a well placed cutback or the finale finesse of a big air section.

Make the call when your in the water, but don't burn anyone.

 

closest to the curl has priority. I surf sand-bar-ie beach breaks where the wave sometimes stands up and sits down a couple of times ("Catholic waves" ) before it makes up its mind, so I don't put any stock on who is further from the shore ... you want to go outside me and wait for the wave of the day, cool, I'll give it to you if you get to your feet. If you want to go inside me and hope I don't get on before you, that's cool too.
Because this wave can break both directions, if there is somebody near me, I usually try to call out which way I plan to go so they can go the other way.

 

Communication is key, just the other day I was trying to go left cause i'm a goofy footer and this other guy kept trying to go right cause he is regular, so when I realized we were opposite and were going to eventually have a run in I suggested to the guy that we switch and he could go his way and I go mine and it worked out perfect.

Both got our choice. Rides in opposite directions for a while. Only thing that went wrong was I ended up getting onto a right because it wasn't going left and I was closest to the peak so I went but he went too because he probably thought I would go left again and so I was riding behind him until he fell and I had to quickly straighten out and go around before finally getting caught by the whitewater.

It was a fun ride while it lasted. He technically shouldn't have gone seeing me go from the peak but our prior agreement kind of set that up so I didn't hold it against him. I see this guy a lot anyways so I know he's got good intentions and it wasn't on purpose. Just gotta talk out there if it's getting crowded. It's when everybody puts blinders on and just goes no matter what is when issues happen and people get mad.

I got burnt by a snake on Sunday but I was having too much fun to even say anything. I turned myself around to take a right (I'm on the peak) and this c0cksmooch hipster with a handlebar mustache starts paddling at the same time and grabs it. I was basically on top of him so there wasn't really any space to drop in next to him. It was so blatant that I figured he must have thought I was going left or something. Either that or he's a c0cksmooch. I yelled at him as he was taking off but didn't make a point of telling him off again. He stayed inside after that or I would've thrown his sh!t in the water. Focking snakes!

Herro.There are spots where this is the norm. If you paddle out you're gonna have to paddle battle until you earn some respect in the water. Generally if you are not totally kooking out or being a d*ck people will give ya some credit eventually. No one owes you a wave get in position and take it!

 

So I've been wondering this for a while but have been too lazy to ask. What is back paddling, specifically? I've never heard the term before coming on here, and I'm under the impression it's a new name for snaking waves, but then someone uses it in a context different than what I've always thought of snaking as (deliberately paddling around someone, right before a wave breaks, to get closer to the peak so that you are in a priority position).
