To me it was someone who waited until the peak was coming at you and then paddled around your back at the last second to take off deeper.

I've heard the term for as long as I've been surfing.

to me it is when you're in the slot and some dude on the shoulder is looking for a sign of hesitation or weakness. Look 'em dead in the eye and tell them "coming left/right". If you are slotted and "call the wave" you better f*rkin' go or else I'll lose all respect for ya.

Here in Ocean City, NJ this is the norm. If you don't do battle, you won't get many waves. It is what it is.

    Amen.

There are a few spots here like that. I think it's just an excuse for a d1ck to be a d1ck. I'll drop in after 3 or more snakes.

Oh man yeah it's so core in OC dawg

Hey I'm pretty sure there's a wave there right now most the locals don't even know aboot or maybe they're just too core to surf it

I guess if you bought your 5 mill your entitled to your turn huh

90% of New Jerseyian surfers shoulder hop when it's over chest these days bet

Man surfing needs more violence these days..kinda like population control if you know what I be sayin

If it works for the city of drugs guns and brothers loving brothers I could only imagine it would work wonders for soft core New Jerseyians

It seems that you have lost the will to compete. No excuses. Out maneuver the guy. Va Beach etiquette.

Always called it snaking. Most blatant snaking I've ever received happened in Nica -so hilariously unnecessary and ridiculous I just turned to the crew shook my clown head and we all laughed, didn't even exchange words with the guy. I did snowball him -not sure if he made the section or not. He was a Brazilian anyways -which are the most notoriously obnoxious surfers on the planet so its not like he woulda cared. In Bra-zile I ride your wave too!

The snake move is totally unnecessary in a normal line-up. It really shows how you are- just like the little kid at school who cuts in the lunch line and never grows up. Some ppl just don't have any class.

Don't get me wrong- I'm not saying that there should be no jockeying in the lineup. I'm not saying that your entitled to a wave. But what I am saying is that its a childish kook move, specially if someone does it for no reason. It's a move reserved for regulation in the line up.

If someone does it to me once- maybe I will let it go. But a second time? I'm going to drop in regardless. Or grab your leash and yank you out of the wave so neither of us will get it. Actually it's funny- every time I have grabbed someone's leash- they never say anything or try to argue... I guess cause there own conscience tells them that they where in the wrong. I don't have any respect or tolerance for someone who blatantly paddles right in front of you at the last moment in order to get into position. It's just childish- grow up already.

The guy that's back paddling is the smart surfer that knows when he's drifting off the peak and trying to stay on spot. The guy that sits there and drifts away is the loser. This is not being a ****, it shows that you know what up with the current. I don't know when it became a sign of being aggressive it's been a practice that comes with experience for many decades now. The **** is the one who comes charging back to the point to your left or right on the outside and try's to reclaim the peak when the set comes through. Park your ass there like its achord to the bottom. Learn it and earn it.

Lost the will to compete? First of all I don't go surfing to compete with others, I go surfing because I love surfing. I leave my ego in the cage I arrive in, and never quite understood how people starved for waves, like we are on the East Coast, can sit in the line up and talk about their crappy existences work/family/cage they drive. That dies beyond the breakers for me. Second, I ask because I don't intentionally drop in on another surfers ride, however, if someone wants to pull a scumbag move like snaking/back paddling, then I will feel no guilt in ruining their wave, or as you call it, "competing".

Thank you for the most awesome comment. I couldn't agree more with you and I like your style. The one's who defend the snake on here are just that.....childish line cutters in the lunch line at school.
