I have been bodyboarding for little over a year now. Coldest water i have been in is 55 with my 3/2 along with booties and gloves. I want to keep riding this winter but not sure what suit thickness would be the best investment for me, any tips on riding in colder waters would be awesome too!

    It's wetSUITE. Not wet-soot. Wet-sweet.

So glad we had this conversation.

OP- what they're tryna say is:

1.) do an intro post of yourself, and be sure to include: board dims, pics of your lady or moms, what you sip on Fridays, any mental or physical disabilities you may have, and how well/often you do sand reconne

2.) metard wants to know how many walkers you've killed, how many people you've killed, and why

3.) do a quick search on the forum of this topic as there have been many "treads" on this (just over my two year tenure here I've noticed, and there are probably many more than that)

    4.) for future ref...here it's called a "suite" not a "suit"

...and, E, always be sure to consult the forum of you peers prior to seeking any bogus, professional medical advice

You're basically all caught up to my knowledge, you're on your own now...good luck

Btw- I use an oneill mutant 5/4 w/r4 patagooch boots and gloves and I make 2-3 hr sessions through the winter up here just fine (I might be slightly cold blooded though)

Honestly dude...there's this thing nowadays called a Search Engine, with Google at the lead. Yet, you come to a surf predicting website without an intro asking wetsuite questions. And to top it off, you don't tell us about where you plan to surf. So played out, it's boring.

If you've worn a 3/2 with booties and gloves in 55 degree water, what would be the next logical step? Maybe a 4/3? Seems logical, right? Unless you plan on boggy bourding in the mid-Atlantic and further north, you might even want to consider a 5/4, correct? Oh yeah, and a hood would probably be a great idea too.

And before you start asking about which kind (Rip Curl, O'Neill, etc.), why don't you visit a local surf shop and actually check some out...maybe even talk to the guy running the shop. You can get lots of great info, AND you can help out a dying resource (local surf shops).

    Hope this helps.

It depends on the air temp, and your tolerance for the cold. With mid 50's air temp and mid 50's water temp I can do a spring suit with booties mainly for comfort in the fins. If you are riding a boogie board with fins, you will be kicking a lot which will keep your body much warmer then a surfer on a log who can theoretically catch waves without getting his hair wet. Being in the water with a suit is much warmer than being on a board in a suit as the wind chill is much less. In 37-38 degrees water and below freezing air temp I can do a 4/3 g&b with a hooded vest underneath and not get cold accept for the inevitable ice cream headaches. Also it depends on if the suit is flat stitched or glued and bind stitched. Glued and bind stitched is like adding another 1mm in suit. My 3/2 g & b will keep me sweating into the low 50's. If you want to enjoy the cold water more and increase your tolerance, youtube cold shower therapy or the Ice Man himself....Wim Hof.

Cold showers everyday keep the sweatsuits away!

in order to know what extremes your water temp gets, be nice to know at least what state you're in.

Anyway, the water in my area doesn't usually get below about 49 deg F. I always use a 4/3 mm, even up to when the water warms up to the low 60s. I hate booties, so only put them on when the water gets down to about 56...gloves at about 53 or so.

Haha, nah dude...only that the question is just so played out. If you're cold in a 3/2, get a better 3/2 or a 4/3...it's just good common sense.

Oh, BTW: I *did* score today (after posting my cynical cranky reply). Swell Info really fvcked up today, predicting "chest to shoulder". Imagine my surprise when I pulled up into double-overhead long period walls at the Corner this morning. Fkn BIG, brother!!!

I've been trying to send my cell pix to my email acct so I could post 'em here, but no worky so far...I'll keep tryin'

Nah dude, you don't need to apologize...I was just yanking your leash a little bit (ok, maybe a lot). Seriously though, there's a lot of better resources right at your fingertips for such questions. And, it was a legit question...just one that gets asked here A LOT.

So, next time you come back, start a thread introducing yourself properly, and you'll suffer an onslaught of love barbs. It's like an initiation. Then, we can start talking about the new suite you decided on, and where you're doing your cold water surfing.

Exactly what I was thinking. Plus he spelled wetsuite wrong. I'd pass on boggy bourding altogether and purchase a wing suite. Now that looks like fun. Plus I need someone with such expertise. Planning to start a gang that robs banks to fund extreme sports trips and give away to the poor.
