Your time will be better spent snowboarding. Never surfed Maine but it will be cold cold.. It's not really a surfing Mecca but I'm sure it can have quality. Do some web searches for spots and gear. You will probably get better information than you will from this crowd.

for wetsuit you want a hooded 5-4-3 , booties and lobster claws ... I think you might have trouble finding a shop that has serious rubber for rent ... most places have a bunch of 3-2s for summer people but I'm just guessing there is not a huge market for renting thick suits to winter travelers. A board will be no problem though. The guys at Black Point can point you in the right direction.

Spots are not too much of a mystery, though from pics I've seen there are plenty of secluded off the grid places...toughest thing is you really have to drive in to places as everywhere is 10-15 min removed from rt 1 & 95...so know your buoys, swell and wind directions, and tides - good luck

there are some spots in maine that are super secluded and very PNW-esque. piney and rural. you can def surf alone.

True to a point. However, access is much, much favorable in ME than WA. You can surf alone but do it on the wrong day in winter Maine and it'll be your last session. There are some big-azz tides in ME as well as currents. If you don't know the break, it is very capable of surprising you and not in all good ways. Depending on the one you're at, I recommend a day of recon before actually charging it if the conditions are on the end of gnar. J

Also, John Denver wasn't full of schitt when he said Maine breaks were rocky.

 

Maine is true to variety. You an surf by a pier with a ferris wheel in the horizon. You can surf with mansions in the horizon. You can surf rugged beaches with room to spread out. You can surf rocky no mans land breaks with rugged pines. You can surf kamikaze breaks that only work on the third moon when the swell/wind is spot on after a procession of voodoo spells. And you can surf some crazy heavy stuff if you've got a boat and you know the legends.

So don't come here.

 

^ yup, 1st season in I tried to paddle out when no one else was. As an avid swimmer with very good ability I thought, I can do it...

After taking numerous blows on the head on the inside I stopped to judge my forward progress instead of just lateral...almost ended up pounded butt hurt on top of rocky ledge extending down the south end of the beach, but some how managed to get outta there unscathed (in part thanks to the refraction)

Lesson learned...next big one waited to see the easiest path out and where the currents were...haven't missed a big swell I could get to the ocean for since

Tides are very scary.

One time at Fort Point, I want out at outgoing and got swept out to see.

I was surfing naked.

Of course once past The Potato Patch I had my ***** bitten off by a white shark.

I finally swam back to shore, hypothermic and all, and there was the shark dead on the beach. The shark had choked on my pen!s.
