dips, pulls ups, reverse pushups, reflex bag, etc might be overkill that could lead to burnout. Pushups, crunches, and a squats are all you really need...the rest is optional.

I've found bicycling, if done right, can replace squats and satisfy the cardio portion of a workout. It's also more fun than being cooped up in some room doing monotonous exercises. Furthermore, cycling is good for surfing because it sharpens your reflexes (dodging cars, people, etc).

The Latin butt workout comes highly recommended. Should meet some of Cep's requirements as well.

I surf all year round, but much of the year carries flat or blown out conditions here. I recently started going to the gym again, which used to be something I was into during college years. I have always been a running, which def helps the cardio side of surfing. But the arms and shoulder muscles for surfing are very difficult to target. I mostly focus on shoulders and upper back, using high rep/low weight. I will also toss in chest, bi, tri, and lower back 1-2 days a week. Spending time working on shoulders and back really helps you keep that conditioning for surfing. The downfall, is that you always gain weight in the gym. Muscle always weighs more, even if it fairly lean. The result, at least for me, has been improved long boarding, and reduced short boarding skill.

I'm going to give u some workout advice I learnt from a meathead many years ago.

first off,go to the gym 5 days a week,2 days off to let ur muscles heal.dont do everything in ur first visit, like what we used to do is ,one day is arms, next day shoulders, next day chest, next day back, last day legs.all u need is an hour a day.
for example on the back day,our warm up was 30 pull ups,3 sets of 10..lol that's just the warm up.then u do that thing where u kneel on a bench and pull some dumbells up from ur sides.then the pulley systems..and a lot more but I don't remember that was years ago.

heres my words of wisdom that's been passed down to me by a fellow meathead."your mind gives up before ur body does" so when ur at ur tipping point and feel like ur arms about to snap on the bench press,do 2 more.if u want to get toned,u lift lighter weights with more reps.u want to get meathead big,u lift ur max with less reps,so say u bench press 2 50lb dumbells on a bench and that's ur normal,do 75lbs but only 5 reps.lol this shyt is science bro I'm not bs u.first day I did legs no joke I barely was able to walk out the gym,had to sit for a week lol.

anyway just going to the gym, doing the bench press for 20 minutes, then doing legs for 20 minutes, then doing arms for 20 minutes is a waste.got to be dedicated

This is exactly what I've been doing for 40 years, and it's worked very well for me.

Unfortunately, most surfers don't want to hear this. They believe that a muscular body "hurts your surfing".

    Tell that to Laird.

OTOH, not all bodies respond to the same types of training...YMMV

Preach it cep...if you want to mix stimuli you could also
mix in max days with fewer reps to keep things fresh and also to work on anaerobic power stuff that our long forgotten latex punchin dummy buddy used to speak of...but try to lay off the chips and sausages...

If you do low reps low weight all the time you're just working your capacity for that stuff and won't be progressing at all...for me these days, I love capacity (being a swimmer from the era of capacity) however, it blatantly obvious how important buffering and utilizing lactic acid is...how that helps to build muscle (and therefore burn more cals & fat)

So I'd say, give yourself 6 weeks of building an aerobic base (20-30 min of jogging/swimming 2x a week and reps of 15-20 on 3-4 rounds w/:20-30r between rounds 2-3 min rest between sets) 3x a week

Then begin working in other stuff and vary your work and exceed is like cep says
