I didn't get a 4/3 for the summer. I got it for when all the other peeps put on their 5/4's and 6/5's. Yes there are great swells in the winter, it's just the ice cream headaches are unforgiving for an out of shape ex sugar addict who has been in keto right now and keeping the time at 4:21. Yes I do want increased strength, endurance, and flexibility for my surfing, but in the words of Lester Burnham, "I want to look good naked!" As much fun as surfing is in the winter, with it's ice cream headaches and frozen ground, it's just not as good as when the sand is hot, the skin gets burned, and the babes are wearing their underwear in public. What beats board shorts, a rash guard, cool splash of the ocean on one's face, followed by a nice toke lying on the beach? It sure as shiit isn't football and hot chocolate for me at least. Will I be out on some of them cold winter days, hyperventilating from the cold after getting my suit flushed and face frozen, only to ask myself "How did I get here?" and "Why do I keep going back for more?" You bet. But I want to look great and be more in shape for the summer, and I have 7 months from now and I already started a month ago.
How do I work this? This isn't my beautiful automobile. How did I get here? Man, my whole approach changes in the winter. I am way more conservative in my approach to a wave. Cruise and carve vs boost stylee.
I only go 3 days a week, and I will spend 90 min lifting (with a 30 min run after). Day 1 - chest, upper back, abs (core) Day 2 - shoulders, legs Day 3 - biceps, triceps, lower back, abs (sides) It has been working well for me so far. I used to lift 5-6 days a week, back when I had tons of free time in college. I hurt my shoulder doing that, and need to be careful or it could happen again.
A number of reasons I reckon...I guess I try to avoid beatings a bit more. I still pull in but not as recklessly. Also, the damn rubber just makes me feel so less flexible. That being said, my conception of 'winter' is January through March 21.
yea I was the same when I had free time, working out just to kill time lol,and its good for u.i havnt worked out in a while, but my job is an excercize in its self.only thing I'm lacking is the cardio,i have a pretty big upper body, shoulders, chest, arms from lifting **** all day,but I'm developing a beer belly lol because I don't run anymore. u know its fukd up,iv been skinny my whole life, naturally toned without working out,u know the skinny guys with a 6pack and v to the crotch lol,and I remember telling everyone I wish I could gain weight, unfortuantly I did lol,and I don't like it
Honestly? Best workout is the one that your body and time allows... But if you are looking for the best exercises to keep you fit for YOUR next surf season I would stick to these..... SWIM, SWIM, SWIM!! as much as you can. That will keep your paddle muscles and leg muscles in good shape, easy on the joints, and also will keep you up to speed cardio wise.. then push ups and core exercises, balance boards, and jump ups onto steps boxes ect....
I found this site, some really good advice and exercises here on increasing paddle power and endurance. http://surfstrengthcoach.com/surf-shoulder-exercise/
Sun, warmth and boardshorts are nice. Bet lets be honest here, theres nothing like surfing some XL swell freezing your balls off in isolation for 3 or 4 hours with ice on your face. To me its not the temperature that keeps me out of the water, and looking for somewhere else to surf. there are only two factors. : Wave Quality, Crowds Temperature inhibitions are a result of poor equipment or personal adaptability
Ohh dude, I mean, my good man, you should familiarize yourself with the sovereign nation of Iceland. It's, like, north of Canada(I almost typed "Camden" there)....across from Norway or something. But there exists hidden folk there who live amongst the rocky outcroppings, and they have been known to serve coffee and oancakes to those they consider "cool." Do they have weed in Iceland? Probably smells like fish and eggs. Nordic people smell like fish and eggs.
Oh and sir who posted this query of exercises...... Don't do exercises for surfing, just surf. You smoke, right? Other than that, the internet is a fantastic way to improve your surfing. It has helped me immensely.
