Wondering if there is swell would i be better of driving south a little and fight traffic/crowds or could i find a decent wave in the area of Rich snobs and kooks??

If you have 4wd head towards Corova on the beach. You will see a big green ocean buoy that has been washed into shore. There is usually a good break to the left. Other than that the light house is the only other consistent break. You may get lucky and have a great sandbar out by your place.

Get into town really early or really late. The traffic heading into Corolla can backup all the way to the bridge.

DP early for trips down to the Rodanthe, Buxton or Frisco areas. And don't do it on travel days (Sat, Sun and holidays) or you will get killed by the traffic. Summer traffic around Hampton Roads (VaBeach), and on the I-64 and I-95 is a killer. Advise you travel during the waaaay waaaay off hours.

Sage advice. If you don't get over the bridge by noon on a travel day, you are seriously screwed. I've seen it take over 2 hours to get from Grandy's to Duck in the early afternoon.

    Traffic

The worst traffic you'll encounter is through duck. Def don't speed through duck and go early.
