hello fello swellos,i just got back from a morning surf,i kept my suit on and drove home, and as I'm driving I notice a tear above the knee pad thingy,im guessing the stitching sucked and I can see clear through it,probably about a half inch tear.the suite is only a year old.i had no problems in the water, everything was normal, but it freaked me out when I seen it and realize its only going to get bigger.

so how da phaq do I fix it?i never repaired a suit before,i just googled wetsuit repair kit and seen some neoprene cement shyt,im going to try to find something like that locally.so do I just put it over the tear?or do I have to use a patch or something?please help me my fello swellos,we got a swell coming Christmas eve and id feel a lot better if I paddled out without a hole in my suite...

    thank you

Have it professional repaired. Some companies will repair free of charge, at least, they used to....

yea I ordered it from wetsuitwarehouse last year and I believe my warranty expired.i checked a few videos on youtube, where I'm lost at is its not really a tear,it looks like the stitching separated from the neoprene to the knee pad thing, probably since its so damn tight putting it on.i called my local surfshop they say they got the neoprene cement stuff, just curious as to how to apply it.my suites drying outside for the moment,il probably take a pic later and maybe u guys will have more insight on how to fix

Spring of 2014 a small shark nipped my knee and tore a hole in my 2 mm suite. I used that stuff on the rip and it worked very well. It's super easy to use and comes with instructions. I hope it works for you.

I had another wetsuite that developed a hole at a seams after only one winter . I had bought it from a surf shop. They sent it back to Body Glove who gave me a new suite. That's an advantage of buying local as opposed to on line, I guess. The shop owners pressure the manufacturers to make good on their product for their better customers I guess.

My experience with this kind of failure is neoprene cement wont really fix it. The reason the suit had stitching there and not just a glued seam is that its a stress point - without restitching, the neoprene cement wont hold for long. If you've got some sewing skills I would just fix it myself, if not I would send it to Hyperflex to get fixed right, and do it in the middle of the winter when you wont be wearing the 4/3 anyway. You don't wear a 4/3 all winter in north jersey do you?

Aqua seal works well. All four of my suites are repaired with it. I blow out all my suites elbows then just put Aqua seal on them. I need a more durable suite than xcel.

like mitch said, stitch it first...then put masking tape over the inside of the repair and put aquaseal over the outside and let it soak in (don't recommend putting repair cement on the inside...it might dry abrasive). Let cure and remove tape.

btw, the people who make aquaseal (clear cement) make a black version, too...you'd think it would be better and hide the repair, but it's actually not as good as the clear stuff. The clear stuff looks like crap on a suite, but it holds better.

yea that's the problem the stress point, idk if over a period of time pulling it up my legs like I normally do caused it to tear.i couldn't feel anything in the water, some water soaked in but nothing out the ordinary.im going to try the cement stuff,il pick it up tomorrow and hopefully it holds for a few more weeks.

I normally wear the 4/3 til the first week of January, then the water starts getting cold.its not too bad right now.i wear the 4/3 and I have a detachable 5 mm hood which I wore today, definitly doesn't seal too well got plenty of water down my neck but wasn't that serious..and I got 7mm booties and 6mm gloves.im guessing it didn't affect me too much in the water since I'm laying flat most of the time, but when u bend the knee u can see the tear.i know how to stitch but idk if that's the best solution, like I'm not a pro at stitching but if the glue doesn't work I might resort to that.would like to get atleast another 2 years out the suit before I chuck it

For the stitching I use dental floss. When your done burn the excess floss at the ends with a lighter. It seals nicely with the neoprene. Just be careful not to burn your suit.

I flossed and cemented a crappy 3/2 years back and the repair is still holding. The suit disintegrated everywhere else but over the repair.

Rip curl or oneill sell the flexible glue. Dont use aquaseal. If you go to your local surf shop you should be able to find it. It is about 25$. A little steep but well worth it. Super flexible and comfortable when its all done. I repaired the hood on my 5/4/3 it was ripped across thethroat about a 6" tear. No sewing involved and its dry asit was when brand new.

If you have an old suit take some of the tape from a seam off and use rubber cement. It's worked well for me. Spread the tear open apply rubber cement to both sides let dry and touch together. Then do the same to the tape and apply. That should hold. You could use fishing line to stitch too.

You could call hyperflex and tell them the stitches ripped bynthe knee pad. They might fix it for you out of warranty. They have great customer service.

iv used hyperflex for a while now,i never had to contact customer service but I think its a good suite for a great price.im sure they don't use top of the line stuff in their suites like ripcurl and billabong but aslong as it keeps me in the water I'm fine.my old 6/5/4 kicked the bucket last year so depending on how the swells hold this winter I might go pick up a new suit from the surfshop and fork over the doe for a good brand so this kind of stuff doesn't happen.id like to try the glued seams instead of the stitched ones

I have had success with a farming needle, dental floss and neoprene cement. For professional repair, Terrapin wetsuite repair inv Texas is great.
