Question for everyone, no need to give away spots but how does the east coast fair with pointbreaks. Yea there are a couple mediocre ones in NJ but how about the northeast's. I see New England's got quite a few, also even Florida. Looking for alittle more juice and length in the rides.
NJ has 2 pretty legit pointbreaks. They are fickle. One is a right, the other two are lefts. I will not disclose where these are, or how often they break. Take a look at Google Earth or wait for the first person to spot burn. I have surfed 2/3 of them. One of them I have surfed a bunch of times and each time I had a mediocre session. The other pointbreak I have caught absolutely going off twice in my life...tube city and head high both times.
yes, they exist. But for the newb coming into town, expect there to more than likely be a bunch of locals who have been waiting for the swell. It will be tough getting the goods, but it does exist. Gotta put in your time up here in the north. Oh, and at the standout points all the good waves will be taken, and expect to get a little ribbing too... They will make you feel so (not) good about your abilities
By the way...Once you get up into New England, it gets more interesting. The topagraphy changes, and there are lots of bends in the coast. Rhode Island has a couple of really really good pointbreaks and they are well known. They can both hold well well overhead surf, but I don't know how consistent they are. Then as you go further north, I've heard some tales of Maine pointers that are rarely surfed. Thems uncharted territory for me.
supposedly sandy hook is a point break, maybe it was 20 yrs ago, doesnt look like it now.the waves don't wrap around the point like theyr supposed to,they just hit deep water and fade away.idk I never saw anything special in nj,just regular beachbreaks.up north has some good points tho and some reefs I believe.somebody posted a vid from hurricane bill years ago on here in some state park, looked like waimai
Definently better points, bottom contour and actual (rock) reefs up In New England. Fairly easy to find. Before gps and google earth- I used just an old map and scored some classic surf. Now with the web you can find anything. I don't think anyone will come out and tell you the spots- but there is plenty of them. Harder then finding the spots is learning what direction and type of swell works best. The ones in nj arnt all they are cracked up to be... Specially after traveling and surfing some points in other countries. But I guess you could say that it's pretty good for NJ. On the right swell at the right jetty you can get about the same length of ride as the points in nj- granted it doesn't always line up like that all the time... I would suggest traveling up to New England - some great surf up there on the right swell. I remember seeing this cove years ago near Gloucester mass that had an epic swell just peeling the whole way in. Needless to say, I was on a work trip and didn't have my board or suite. Probably couldn't find that cove again if I tried. Only 3 guys out.
Oh a side note- has anyone have any experiences from surfing block island? I always wanted to go there... But have not made it yet ...
nah, it still breaks. dont say that i'm blowin it up because i've seen a bunch of videos and photos that show obvious landmarks that give away the spot. i've seen a couple people try to mirror their photos but it's still obvious as hell.
The best point break in Florida is...... The Restricted Area at Cape Kennedy. Now you know. If you go, They take you to Guantanamo!
same i mean couldnt we ride a ski out there or a boat, the ocean and beach belongs to the public, well the ocean in this case.
