Thinking about a boat trip this winter to someplace reasonably close. Right now I'm looking at Tortola or CR. Anybody have any ideas?
Can't find a lot of info about Tortola. Are there a lot of spots there? Looks like it is very inconsistent and you have to be there a few weeks to get guaranteed swell.
I don't know much about Costa. All my friends go down there all the time, but I have yet to go. All I will tell you is that I have never heard any of them boating around in CR. I guess it's uneccesary. CR is setup like Mexico. A huge stretch of swell rich coastline. Obviously, the pacific is the side you want to be on for good swell, but the carribean side gets swell sometimes. But I guess my point is, your CR boat trip would consist of just docking all up and down the west or inner/south west coast. So, as far as a "boat trip", Im thinking many of the carribean island locations would be more ideal, but you will be in a swell "crap shoot"... So, although I am sure you chose those two destination based on price and available funds. Which is understandable. So, good luck with either spot, but if you want the real deal boat trip, you gotta head out to the island chains in the Indian Ocean. I know it costs an arm and a leg to get to Mentawais or Indo, not to mention maleria pills etc. But if you want an ALL SURF, ALL BOAT trip, I would suggest that. But you are looking at twice the cost in airfare and a ***** of a flight. Good Luck... A surf trip or a boat trip anywhere would be awesome, but if you are all about the surf, just make sure you pick the right area and season... God luck
My wife's ex-boyfriend is captain of a boat down in Costa, goes down to Panama and to Nicaragua. He might specialize in fishing now, but I know he used to do surfing, and he supposedly rips himself. I could look into if you want, I looked at the prices at one point and it wasn't that bad. I know he can get pretty wild if you want, and he has been doing it for 10+ years so he know his way around and the boat is well known down there.
if i was giong to do a boat trip, i think i would do south pacific or somewhere in indo. I've been to costa rica and you don't really need a boat to surf there. Never been to the carribbean, i'd like to go to Barbados next but i don't think you need a boat there either. I think if you want as many waves as you can handle, go to Costa Rica, if you want easy going non-sketchy vibes and an easy place to navigate around in, and plenty of coastline to explore, I'd do the carribbean. The coastal road that goes up and down costa rica is actually sort of sketchy and the street signs are nonexistent most of the time you can't find coast line to check. Costa Rica is more of an adventure. anyhow long tangent....blah
Tortola is in the British Virgin Islands and does get good surf. It has a handful of points, reefs, and beach breaks and the best time and (chance) to score would be from December to March. It's a small island and all you would need is a rent a car. yeah. I've been to CR a ton of times so I know how it breaks. Just looking for a novelty of doing something different without having to spend all that time traveling to the south pacific.

took a trip down to BVI with my family last winter and was very dissapointed. the breaks there will only break with very large waves and none of the swells allthough they were at least head high waves were not creating any decent breaks worth paying that much money for. i know many people that go to costa rica however do not expect yourself to surf all day down there. the wind blows everything out by around 10 and might clean up later in the afternoon around sunset. this winter break i went to rincon in puerto rico and had a great time there. no need to get a boat all you need is a car and you can get to any break and even head up to aguidilla and surf some very famous breaks that im sure youve heard of. steps. marias. indicators. domes.
