to answer the question of this thread. Jonas boomed and then i busted. Im still cleaning the whale jizz from my wetsuite
new England can handle much bigger swell without closing out.its just the direction and winds, everything lined up perfect for ny.i watched the obx cams on Saturday,md,nj,and li on sunday,ny got it the best.its a nightmare traveling to ny tho, especially to surf.easiest way would be to take the train......if it was me,id ride the train for 3hours with 1 board, paddle out, ditch my board as a 15 footer came in,break my board in 3 places and go home lol..that was a day for the locals
ok I exaggerate a bit,but it was close to 20' lol,the clean up sets, depending on where u were.rockaway was pumping, while Lincoln was 6ft and playful.im not a 42yr old surfer lol,so I'm just going by what iv seen over the years,im sure there were bigger days, but biggest I ever seen.wish I could witness that in nj.biggest/perfect day I seen was doomsday, and that looked like shorebreak compared to this swell in ny
Saw all you guys get on it real early at L****'s and it looked real good, but there were like 25 guys on it 5 mins after the sun came up so I kept on motoring. Got in at Straws and proceeded to get frustrated as F. Got like 2 waves and went to work. Was up in Maine on Sunday and managed to have my Lib Tech smashed in two. Jonas Bros did not bode well for me.
yes yes but there are still many south facing spots of new england that prefer south and easterly swells as well. I like em both but I know my way around new england more.
I hear ya.. The pics make it look better than it was. Not saying it wasn't good, it was. But the wind was so strong. I didn't go to NY, but I talked to a bunch of my friends and they all said pretty much the same. "It's sick, you blew it. But it would be better if was 20mph lighter" Here's where they were
I saw you walk right by me with your Lib Tech in 2 pieces, no joke. I thought those were not supposed to break? I paddled out right after. I saw another snapped board after I got out.
Thanks for the post NYNJ, that was a sick tubefest. I was stuck home Saturday, with no way of getting out (not that I would have). Sunday I was hoping for an afternoon surf, but transportation wasn't cooperating. Rockaway looked brutal anyway, way beyond what I would paddle out in. Surfed the leftovers on Monday; it was mellow, crowd free, and a lot of fun. Still had some push to it! All in all, I got less out of this storm than the previous no-name swells.
Mac & sig, were yous in Bush land area or farther north? Talked to a guy who paddles out next to me north of there and he just said, "it was big"...I was just like, fok, it's big here, how much bigger can this fugr get??? Regardless, couldn't believe my Austin didn't snap after a couple pummelings and hold downs...he makes/made solid stuff This storm makes me think I need to pay better attention to the barometer and isobars rather than just buoy water data...you guys check that stuff?
For VB standards Jonas was BOOM! should have went to buxton Saturday but I stayed. If you didn't see them in the snow low thread here they are again. Tons of good waves came through. Best it's been since sandy if not better than that IMO. Croatan side of the inlet on Sunday from 2-dark was like a left point on the right one. It's been awhile since I surfed this much fun waves in VB
It's funny how everyone complains about how ****ty VB is when it actually does turn on nobody paddles out.
Rockaway can from Sunday. Looks a bit like Ocean Beach -> http://www.surfline.com/video/variabless/cam-replay-of-the-day-rockaway-ny-jan-24th_135430
wow you were right nynj long beach was the call. Sorry i doubted you. Still stoaked i got some good ones where i was at and didnt blow out the ol' knee again.
Stack is a pro.. they are making it look way easier than it was Sunday. Sick edit and props to those guys for charging
Wow, who would have thought- the worst spot in the Northeast gets Surfline's cam of the day. Every once in a while the paddle out is really punishing there, and I wonder what it's like at Ocean Beach at a similar size. Worse, I imagine. Certainly haven't ever had a 20 minute paddle out in NY. But then again, when its this big, I stay home with my tail securely between my legs. Oldsoul, did you paddle out? SE facing spots were probably nuts too...
