I had my meniscus cut 8.5 weeks ago. I can't surf yet but I want to know what you guys think is the best knee brace for surfing.

Also, if you had this surgery how long was it before you could start surfing again?

    All medical Advice is appreciated.

You came to the right place... I'd reach out to Matheson the Abandonner. He will know.

Rub some tussin on the knee and will will be fine.

took me about 2-3 months to get back into the water after the arthroscopic surgery on my miniscus. my leg was was weak as fvck and it took much longer to regain confidence in that knee. it was close to a year before i got back to 100%.

a brace (unless you get a rigid one) wont do much. they ain't gonna give you any type of brace because they say it can inhibit the healing process and restrict movement.

go to PT everyday. do squats. do lunges. beat off. it works wonders.

You'll be able to surf once you feel comfortable walking around without the brace.

Use the brace the Dr. gave you to surf. That's what I did. (I didn't have surgery, but was in a brace for 2 months). A Little clunky, but after two months being out of the water I didn't care. Don't push it either. A Carolina Cutty could send you right back to surgery

    Front knee or back knee?

I've had my left (front) knee rebuilt, blew every ligament out of it. I have a custom fitted carbon fiber brace I use when I play hockey, wakeboard, snowboard, etc. Works great. I tried it surfing...once. It just doesn't work.

No brace that is rigid enough to give any real stability is going to be flexible enough to stay tight and do it's job. Having to bring your knee all the way up and bend it that much just makes all the straps go loose, which combined with the water, means you'll pop up and have a the brace down around your ankles. PT and strengthening the knee is the only chance ya got, unfortunately.

The good news is (at least for me) I don't put near as much torsion on it surfing as I do in other sports. So far I've been lucky and it hasn't impacted my surfing and I haven't screwed it up again.

So the short story, I've tried it, and it doesn't work. You may have a better chance if it's your back knee, but honestly I doubt you'll find one that works.

Listen to El Tardito, he may be a metard, but he knows what he's talkin' aboot.

2-3 months sounds pretty good. Did it still hurt at that point? Mine does. It's still too weak to try surfing on it, but I am keeping up with PT.

I understand why the dr doesn't want me wearing one all the time. I just think it could be useful when I first go back in the water.

Yea I will take it easy, being injured and not surfing sucks. I have a chunky brace at the moment but it is not good in the water. I was using it on land before the surgery.

Front knee. I will just wait until it feels strong enough then. Its good to hear you can do all of that after getting it rebuilt.

yes. it hurt or felt shaky for about a year.

6 months later i would go to do something and my knee would remind me that i had surgery.

    it can be frustrating.

also, my entire (left) leg atrophied to where i could pull like two inches of skin off. that was prolly 3 weeks after surgery.

also, you should know i took to many pills one night shortly after surgery, behaved prurient and did crazy things with a once wqs surfers sister. let me know if i'm going too far here.

Yeah, will never be 100% for me, but so far it hasn't taken me out of the game.

PT, strength training, etc...do it, and keep doing it, even if it feels 100%.

And keep your bort propperely waxed. Last thing you want is to have that front foot slide out and tear the crap out of it again.

    Good luck...

Muhammed Ali s coach told him masturbation or any type of sex would weaken his legs before a fight.
Based on that, we can see what you were doing......

My biggest screw up was when it felt 100% thinking it was solid and I was good to go. Made the mistake of playing beach volleyball w\o my brace and screwed it up again. Luckily no surgery, but once again set me back months.

The atrophy really sucks. Not just the muscle, but I lost all flexibility. Never been %100 since.

For the OP, no matter how it feels, always treat it with care, or you will get reminded from time to time. Do that ya gotta do, but don't f it up again due to carelessness...like my dumba$$.

It is a relief to hear this because some things I have read online say 4-6 weeks recover. Yea I had really bad atrophy too. Thanks for responding. Sounds like a strong story... continue.

First time I got my right knee scoped...3 months and I started back on a Stewart Hydrohull 7'2" funboard that was previously broken in half. I was back shortboarding in less than a year.
Second time with the right knee, when I just got a little resurfacing done...About 4 weeks I was back on a longboard. Then I was back on a shortboard in like 2 months. No brace is gonna help you. Your muscles and the healing process will help you. A LOT of injuries can be prevented by ensuring you have strength, flexibility, and your body mechanics down-pat. Best of luck. being injured sucks, and I have become too good at it these days.
