First, let me start by saying I do not recommend this to anybody, especially to the young guns out there, do not try this! It's not safe. Having said that.... Yesterday I pounded a few delicious German beers (which were pretty strong) and then took a spliff to the dome before paddling out. I had a nice little buzz going and felt great and the waves were looking really fun so I went for it. I have done this before (not often) with good results. I found that I was more loose and care-free and just went for it with no second guessing myself or holding back any. My biggest enemy in the water is my mind usually, but yesterday my mind was right where it needed to be. I can achieve this without any substances too, it's not that I can't, but I noticed how I was just getting almost every wave I wanted and was surfing better than usual, which was nice. Maybe I'm just finding a rhythm, maybe I just got lucky that session and it's a coincidence, but I couldn't help but wonder.... Am I better when I drink?
I don't smoke, so I can't speak for that mind set. When I was young, maybe once or twice I have a couple drinks, saw there were waves and headed out. But very rarely would that happen. Just my 2 cents I did watch some dude one time who was wasted paddle out and got hammered into the shore break. People had to drag him out of the water. Idiot
The herb is something that is daily for me so that doesn't really affect me much unless it's really big out then I wait till after to puff. I also have only gone out full on drunk once, and will never do that again lol What I'm talking about is having just a nice buzz, I was in full control, as a matter of fact, I was so much in control that I really was surfing better than usual. Almost like a powerful energy drink + confidence booster + zen like mind control. Hard to explain. Controlled aggression is a way to put it I guess.
My last session was at dusk after two pints of a good micro-brew. It was a hell of a lot better than my sobre dawn patrolle... not slamming you DawnPatrolSUP...
Same here! I pulled a DP session and was only a bit lifted from my wake n bake sesh. I surfed pretty well, the new swell was still filtering in so it was a bit slow and inconsistent, a bit lack luster overall but in the evening the swell filled in nicely and was very consistent in the chest high range, with some plus sets thrown in. A few beers plus better waves resulted in one of my most fun sessions I've had.
I guess you're right, although I don't want to make a habit of it, all the extra beer won't help me get rid of my gut any faster lol
Alcohol is a muscle relaxer and even a few beers will also affect your judgement calls. On waves you would typically pass on or hesitate to catch, or overthink, you were going for and probably riding well. I would say, that possibly, having a few beers improved your surfing, but I wouldn't make it a habit. I would use what you learned during your surf under the influence and apply it to your next session while sober. One of the best surfs I had was a couple winters ago. I ate tacos and drank like 4 tecates in an hour and a half. The surf was a couple feet overhead on set and really fun. I went out not taking myself too seriously because I was technically drunk. I would up surfing for two hours and got a ton of waves, and had a lot of fun. I don't suggest anyone else tries this...Unless danger is your business, like it is mine brahhhhhhhhhh.
my best session this year came directly after i drank a half pint of fireball and a cup of coffee at 9am on the beach...
+1 on the muscle relaxant. Have a few and enjoy yourself man. It's tough with the winter suit, but once it's 4/3 season, I think I'll start tucking a small flask into my suit. That way, when the session gets tough, I can reset my mind. My girlfriend says that drinking during the day is 'going back down a bad road,' but there's not waves at night, so f*ck it
DP-SUP, maybe go with the Rainiers...? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iz-WuLQz_ns In 2004, a black bear received substantial media attention for having consumed 36 cans of Rainier beer in Baker Lake, Washington. After gaining access to a cooler of beer that belonged to campers, the bear avoided cans of Busch beer and used its claws and teeth to open and then consume the cans of Rainier. A wildlife agent said at the time that, "this is a new one on me ... I've known them to get into cans, but nothing like this. And it definitely had a preference.”
DP, I love those "all day" dayz at the beach...when the surf is fun and your setting up camp for the day. Surf hard all day...typically that long first sesh. Then, chill out....eat some food, while scoping the fun surf (mind surfing all irie and what not). As the sun turns more late afternoon and the beach is emptying, throw back a couple and go out for the last sesh of the day with a two beer buzz! Not sure it makes me surf better, but I sure seem to have a good time with it!!!
