Quicksilver needs to change its slogan to "Clyde Will Go". Impressive performance especially after the beating he took on his first wave. That got me off the couch today and into the water
http://encyclopediaofsurfing.com/entries/aikau-clyde Clyde was quite the competitor. Legendary in my book!
I thought the "Eddie would go" slogan didn't originate with his surfing prowess, but rather the sacrifice he made as an original crew member of Hoku'lea. On one of her early voyages, soon after departing Honolulu Harbor and still in the Moloka'i Channel she capsized and the crew, clinging to the overturned hulls, spent hours watching air traffic overhead but no sign of rescue. Eddie volunteered to attempt a long distance paddle on a surfboard in rough seas to get assistance. He was never seen again. Hoku was eventually rescued, the Polynesian Voyaging Society drew strength from Eddie's sacrifice and continue their work today.
No worries. If things stop working, just have the Fonz come by and bang you like a jukebox. You'll be good as new.
Yes it has nothing to do with surfing in reality. Eddie lost his life trying to find rescue for the Hokulea. But the term has just been adopted by anyone willing to do something brave, like paddle out in 50 foot waves as an example.
they were talking about the eddie would go slogan yesterday during the contest. Evidentialy there was an event years ago at wiamea when it was deemed to big. One on the regulars made the comment that it wasnt too big Eddie would go
I feel that Clyde Aikau was the REAL winner of this event. Sure he didn't score big- but he deserves much respect for the respect and honor that he showed to the memory of his brother by paddling out at 65 years old. Many guys will not even paddle out to surf in any conditions at 65... Im sure it was an exceptionally emotional day for him. Clyde- if your out there and you happen to actually read these crazy swellinfo threads- I vote you the true winner of your brothers event. your pal, Mr Belmar
