All right, per DP's request, I'll start a new thread. Relaxing and enjoying a couple cold ones as I write this. Not surf related. Will keep it simple.

Never cared much for spectator sports when I was younger. Much rather participate in something than watch. However, over the years I've developed an interest in certain spectator sports. Friends and participation of family members in various sports have influenced this. Certainly there's a big difference between actually being at the ball park, stadium, arena, etc., than watching the event on TV.
From past threads, I've gathered that there are other sports and activities, other than surfing, that many of us enjoy. I'm interested in hearing what are your favorite spectator sports and teams: professional, college, whatever...

I'll kick this off (no pun intended). In order of preference:
Ice hockey. NHL: Caps. College: Notre Dame, Syracuse.
Football. NFL: Steelers and Redskins. College: Notre Dame, Navy.
Baseball. MLB: Mets, Nationals 3A: Norfolk Tides, Syracuse Chiefs.
Basketball: NBA: None really. College: Notre Dame, Syracuse, Dayton.
And of course the Olympics. Particularly enjoy track and field.

I love the olympics, world cup soccer, and basically any other time I can say "go USA, and fuuck everyone else"

    Redskins

Was an O's fan growing up but they have been bad for so long I fell off.

My girl and I were just discussing, who the hell watches the NBA?

I played lacrosse in college but I don't watch it anymore.

I think what ruined most spectator sports for me are the fat d-bags who obsess over espn and have never ending pissing contests about who wastes the most time memorizing useless sports trivia.

    College football/basketball/soccer: NC State
    NFL: Packers, Panthers, Steelers, Cardinals
    NBA: Thunder, Warriors, Hornets
    Tennis: Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka
    WSL: Owen Wright, Jeremy Flores

The sport I grew up enjoying the most was college basketball, now it's probably the worst product to watch (except March Madness which f'n rules) Give me the NBA over college b-ball anyday! I really enjoy college football but the NFL is still probably my favorite sport overall to watch. That might have a lot to do with fantasy leagues and sports betting but I really look forward to Sunday's. No surfing after 1pm on football Sunday's unless it's all friggin time. If I had to rank sporting events I would go: the 1st NFL Sunday, March Madness/final four, Super Bowl, NBA Finals, College Football National Championship Game.

Old timer here with only network TV sports but here is my list:

Ice Hockey: B's or whatever is on TV. I actually have learned to listen to them on the radio. It's a skill.
Football: Pat's (don't be a hater) but I really like watching any football. But not enough to plan my day around it.
I give a big nod to World Cup Soccer - women & men. (Actually - the women don't dive as often.)
Golf but only if it is a close game on the last day and maybe only the back nine and I have nothing else to do.
I don't watch basketball but I do like filling out the March Madness pool.

Good work DosXX, let's see, where do I start?

The first organized sport I ever played was baseball, started at the tee-ball level and played until probably sophomore year in high school. So naturally I enjoy watching baseball. I became a fan of the Oakland A's 1st because when I was a wee lad there were no major league baseball teams in the Tampa Bay area yet. Why the A's you ask? Well, I picked up a book on Jose Canseco at the book fair in 1st grade and learned about him and Mark McGwire, the "Bash Brothers". Canseco was the 1st 40 / 40 man (40 stolen bases and 40 home runs in a season) and the A's were the best team in baseball at the time. The sh*tty part is that I later learned that they were all on steroids and I lost all respect for them, childhood heroes they were no more.

Then along came the Tampa Bay Devil Ray's, I still have the original hat from that first season! Later to be changed to the Tampa Bay Ray's, because Wayne and all his stupid bible thumping friends complained about the word Devil in the name. I watch most of their games throughout the season if I don't have anything else going on. Been to countless games and even have a jersey hanging in my closet. They've been AL East Champs a couple times and even made it to the World Series once, all on a shoestring budget compared to the rest of the league. Not bad IMO. I believe they'll get their ring one of these days. If the Marlins can do it, the Rays certainly can.

I was one of the smallest kids in the neighborhood growing up and got picked on a little bit so I became interested in martial arts and my Dad put me in Tae Kwon Do. I was a natural and picked it up very quickly and made it all the way to the black belt level. I won several local sparring / full contact competitions and was probably the best in my "class". I remember destroying the 2nd best kid in the class one competition, made him cry and everything. Years later I went back to see my nephews taking lessons at the same place and the instructor was the kid I beat. I couldn't believe it, I then realized I could have been the instructor had I kept with it!

Only problem is my parents didn't have the money to send me across the state to compete so I eventually lost interest and dropped out. I still have a passion for martial arts so I have been following MMA / UFC since the very beginning. My Dad boxed in the army so I would also spar with him in the front yard. He put up a heavy bag and everything so that the kids in the neighborhood could see what we were doing. One of my older friends who usually picked on me tried me one day and I about broke his jaw. We became great friends after that and none of my friends messed with me after that either. I also busted some kids ass in the library at school once and nobody at school messed with me again either. Problem solved.

I'm cursed, doomed if you will, to be a Philly sports fan. At least I raised my boys to NOT root for the Philly teams. I didn't want to subject them to what I have gone through - decades of sports futility.
I like Arsenal in the EPL.
I stopped caring about the surfing world tour after the AI versus Slater rivalry waned. Not into watching a bunch of 80 pound Brazilians.

Baseball has to be one of the most boring sports on the planet! Years back I went to a Phillies and Braves game, had great seats, weather was great, parking was great, beer was great... it sucked!!! I had a better time going to a minor league game in Wilmington, DE. (The Blue Rocks) I like football, but I don't get all crazy about it and try and punch people in the face when my team loses. I used to watch boxing and hockey pretty religiously, but not really any more. I like women's volleyball! I like sports, I just don't really follow any

Next I became interested skateboarding. I think I got my first crappy board around age 7 or 8, it was Variflex POS, terrible board but it got me started. Once I started getting pretty good at it, my parents took me to the skate shop where I showed them the board I wanted, which was a Powell Peralta Tony Hawk. They said they couldn't afford it, which at that time, I believed them, it was an expensive board and they didn't make much money. I was convinced I would never get this board but on Christmas they surprised me and you would of thought I won the lottery. I cherished that board and rode the living sh*t out of it. I progressed pretty well on a board that was way too big for me and started getting smaller boards, almost all were Powell's, my favorite. I was mostly a street skater and would explore all over town. I became friends with Jeff Lenoce and started skating with him and launching off his ramps and skating is mini-vert ramp in his back yard, then we started doing all night lock-in skate sessions at AstroSkate.

I never won any competitions or anything, parents didn't help me pursue it in anyway, but Jeff went on to be a professional, skating for Birdhouse. Youtube him if you want, he's nasty. I continued to skate until I got hooked on surfing at 15 and then surfing kind of took over. Although growing up on the Gulf I didn't get to surf that often so I would skate here and there until I was about 18 when I just stopped all together. Tired of injuries and just lost interest, but still watch the X Games from time to time.

I kinda agree wit you Z. I like baseball at the beginning of the season and at the end. But it's waaay to long. The NHL playoffs are the sh!t. These guys play through broken bones and battle like ancient warriors for the chance to hoist the cup.
I don't watch basketball. Boxing used to be awesome back in the 70s and 80s. 70s heavy weights were great. Ali, Frazer, Foreman, Norton, Shavers, and the white dude Chuck Wepner (real Rocky). 80s you had Sugar Ray Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Tyson. Whitaker versus my boy Julio Ceasar CHAVEZ was one of the best matches I ever saw.

Then there's football. I began playing in the neighborhood and quickly realized I had a passion for the sport and started following it. As a kid the Tampa Bay Bucs were the WORST team in the league by far, so bad I couldn't even watch. I became a Bo Jackson fan around the same time I became a Jose Canseco fan, also by picking up a book about him at the book fair. Ironically the Bucs drafted him but he never played for them and later was signed by the LA Raiders, before moving back to Oakland. So by coincidence I became a fan of two Oakland teams, and I had never even been there before. I was convinced I was going to be the first "White Bo Jackson", playing both baseball and football professionally, neither came true...

I began playing organized football for the Clearwater Tornadoes youth league around 10 years old. 1st year I had to play guard on the O-line, mostly because nobody knew who I was and I wasn't the greatest athlete, but I had heart! I ended up learning and getting better and by the end of the season I was one of the best on the team. Next season I was the starting quarterback and that's the position I played all the way up through about my Junior year in High School. I won a couple championships at the youth level, one year going undefeated and our team was un-scored upon. I played both offense and defense as well as special teams.

I also played High School football and was starting QB for a couple of seasons until I dislocated my throwing shoulder (the beginning of my shoulder problems) and started partying with my friends and lost my drive to keep after it and eventually let my GPA drop and wasn't able to play anymore unless I got my grades back up, which I never did. I just wanted out of HS at that point and graduated on time with a 2.17 GPA.

I'm still a faithful Raiders fan to this day, through the good and bad, mostly bad the last 10 years but last year they showed some promise and it's looking like they're going to be a force to reckon with moving forward. Can't wait to see them in the Superbowl again one day!

Been a Raiders fan since Stabler. Grandmother lived in Port Fierce Fla when I was growing up so we watched all the Dolphins games back in their heyday. Grandmom was deaf but knew every hand signal the refs used. My kids pull for the Panthers so they are my second team mainly because of location. Can't watch B-ball except the farm team in Chas. I go to drink beer an oggle the women. Srsly if you are in Chas, go see a Riverdog game p*ssy galore. First time I pissed in a trough was at the old Chas ball park. Nasty as hell and almost no women. Old men and kids was all that was there but it got pretty rowdy at times. Saw fights on the field and in the stands. Had first beer there at 15. Loved playing basketball growing up but can't watch anything but march madness these days. NBA sux nuts. I'll go see any sport live though. Would have played college tennis if surfing had not "ruined" my life. Senior of HS year all the coaches gave me a ton of chit 'cause I didn't play any competitive sports. I was totally never going to do anything but surf, party and get laid for the rest of my life. Not the best decision of my life but was an excellent 10 year run.;)

Blue Rocks all day baby! My grandmother knew a doctor who would get us special seats near the field with a buffet area. Unlimited hotdogs and chicken fingers make a kid happy.
