I've caught plenty of fish and ate them, tried hunting but never had any luck. However, I do run a kitchen here in the handle, and we use a really cool farm that has some awesome slaughter practice. Instead of loading the cattle/pigs onto a truck where they freak out and release all sorts of endorphins, they walk them through a couple fields for about a mile and a half to slaughter. the animals are calm and grazing the whole way. I took all of my cooks so the could see what has to be done in order for us to get the product we serve. Makes them look at a steak differently and consciously pay attention to preparing it. Oh, and my sous chef found a lil' fungal when we first got there and before the sun wilted them. Fun trippe
#1. I'm looking to buy muthrfurking egg laying hens/ build a chicken coop. (not killing them but I will if they piss me off) #2. Also, just moved into a new place and the old man neighbor attracts squirrels by leaving nuts for them. I am planning to start shooting squirrel with my airgun out back. Way too many of them. Always wanted to try squirrel. Squirrels Shall Perish. #3. Crabs. Anyone outside of Maryland crab? We get our crabs from NC/Louisiana this time of year but I don't seem to hear much crustacean pride from these dudes. Can't wait to get out this summer and chicken neck.
Big difference between killing animals to eat for survival & killing animals to eat as a delicacy.
I like crabbing, too. Erock, rest his soul, gave me a lot of good info a few years back that I still use. I chicken neck and had a couple of traps. Last year some asshole stole them. Licensed, marked, not placed by any commercial traps... I'll chicken neck but doubt I'll drop 40 bucks for another trap.
I want chickens but I don't think my uppity neighbors would allow. We live in da city so I'll have to check code. Squirrels are not very meaty and a little on the gamey side but they are abundant. Got a couple spots on private property at the right time of year and moon can slay some huge blue crabs.
Uh, I shot just about anything that is edible in this part of the country. Lazy, to get the gaminess out of squirrel meat (or any small game meat) try marinating in milk and then Italian dressing. Or cut the meat into cubes, batter them up, deep fry em, then dip in hot sauce. For the better part of my 5 decades, we have lived off of what we shot and grew. Deer, turkey, rabbit, grouse. We grow corn, tomatoes, 5 different types of peppers, onions, carrots, potatoes, eggplant, zucchini, beans, strawberries, and we got grape vines. My buddy has chickens and goats. Another buddy grows powerful bud. So we all barter. It's just the way I was brought up I guess. There was no underlying moral or political reason. Although now I see what some of you guys talk about with the Monsanato stuff and the farming practices.
Caught killed filleted and ate many fish. Shot a deer with a bow and ate it about 15 yrs ago. Shot a boar about 10 yrs ago and ate the bacon and chops. Now I just trade fish for venison and boar bacon. The hunting was fun but its too inland for my taste. Btw boar bacon is awesome.
I grew up in a hunting and fishing family. Being an only son bows and guns were common presents under the tree on Christmas morning from the time I was 10 years old. Couldn't even guess how many rabbits, squirrels, quail, pheasants and deer I took by the age of 20. Every animal taken was consumed and never went to waste. My mother is a great cook especially with fish and game. As an adult I haven't done much hunting. Last deer I shot was probably 10 years ago. Just too many hobbies and not enough time especially when you have kids. Still do a bit of fishing and occasionally clamming and crabbing.
I ate plenty of fish I caught.im not a hunter. a kid I went to school with a long time ago,his father was a hunter.lol this kid ate venicin 365 days a year.i felt bad for him eating the same shyt everyday.had venicin tacos once,i was not impressed
All of the above... Raised in a hunting/fishing household for generations. In fact, right now, there's the last of some pheasant soup I made for my daughter on Sunday 'cause she was feeling kinda sick. Back in the 60s and 70s, Cape May County was the sticks. Still is, in a lot of places. Carried on the tradition to this day, and my sons and daughter both hunt and fish... my daughter is into it more than the boys. This is her with a hen pheasant and one of my two bird dogs, Lou. The second is her first keeper bass. Jerzy Style...
Thinking about killing half my chickens for meat since they aren't doing anything but making a huge mess. I'll let you know how that goes. The other half give plenty of eggs
venison loin medallions coated lightly with flour salt and pepper then pan fried in butter is so delicious. It really depends on which cut of the deer i'm eating whether I like it or not
Hell yeah! That's awesome dude. My dad brought me up the same way(duck not pheasant). I can't wait to get my boy out fishing and shooting
