LB NJ guy almost died

I was back in OC MD 2 summers ago and had to call the cops because this crazy redneck that was renting out Umbrellas tried to tell me that "He owned this stretch of beach" and that because my fiance's family rented their umbrellas from 2 blocks up the beach that we had to leave and take our umbrellas back to the "other zone"

So, not only did I laugh at this guy and tell him to take a long walk off a short pier. I had to call the cops because I was about to fight the guy. He was cussing in front of my 2 years old neice and three women. Being a typical MD hick. So that cops show up and wrote the guy a citation and warmed him....

So, the following conversation was had with a OC MD PD officer. He looked about 20 years old. I confirmed that NONE OF THE SAND ON OC'S BEACHES belong to ANYONE. Not the hotels. Not the umbrella kook. NO ONE.... So all of these "Swim Beaches" are marked that way based on the HOTEL REVENUE. I mean, we all know that OC MD would not exsist without the hotels and toursist. No offense to MD surfers, but I would say that 99.8% of visitors to OC MD are not there to surf.... Probably better off that way... So, the hotels complain and it affects revenue that the city recieves from them.. So basically, city hall is run by the hotels in OC. Every decision is made BY THEM, FOR THEM....

If hotel guests were interested in watching surfers, or surfing. Then every beach would be a surf beach. And although OC MD has a very strong surfnig community, they are a small number in comparison to the travelers, and since OC MD never established "surf friend" rules back in the 70s and 80s in california, its already too late. There all laws all up and down the cali coast that state that it matters not what you build on the beach, they WILL NOT ISSUE swim only beaches unless it is an ABSOLUTE hazzard...

Anyway, to make a long story short, its all about money. Always has been, always will be...

And the argument that surfers are a danger to each other when positioned in large packs will get the following response from the city: "Well now you cant surf". NO SURFING from 10-6...

its a pain, but since they dont already have rules in place, it probably wont ever change... Im guessing. But its like that in most East Coast towns. I hear the same sh** about VB, about Wrightsville.... All the usual suspects have the same problems...

thats so stupid though. knowing the towns or the guards they probably put the "surf zones" in horrible spots. plus they must get very crowded easily. as long as we stay away from the swimming area we can surf where ever

 

Wallsurfr, I am not sure there could be enough "surfing beaches" in Ocean City to deal with this problem. Actually, you pin pointed the problem as being a "surfer" and not a "swimmer." I experienced an almost identical injury down in Hatteras in 2001 when a kook longboarder was walking his board out, perpendicular to the waves as he should, but then he freaked and turned in sideways. I maneuvered to avoid contact with him but the wave dumped me head first on the sandbar in 1 foot of water. I heard lots of crunching and felt compression down my neck and had the nastiest stinger ever. Was I ever happy to have movement in my toes and fingers but my arm was for sh*t the next couple of hours and relatively useless the next couple of days. I healed. Morale of the story: it was caused by a "clueless surfer" in relatively uncrowded, small wave conditions (~3 foot).

 

the surf zone **** is garbage. If you ever been to VB and surfed Croatan you'll notice that little ass surf zone were everyone is corralled which is between a Military base(pendelton) and the swimming area. Most of the time if not all the time it breaks the best at pendelton but you're not allowed to go there. People still do though since you can easily go around the fence, so a couple weeks ago the city put like this metal thing that comes to a point that extends from the fence to the water..which Ive seen some long boarders almost getting Impaled by its ****ing retarded how the city treats surfers, getting tickets for surfing at non surfing hours...why dont they ticket those assholes who goes to the beach and dont have the common decency to walk a couple of feet and throw their **** away

 

wb surfer, I went to UNCW and know your pain, with the amount of surfers down in that area, they are asking for a big problem creating these "surfing zones". The swimmers don't even swim out to the sandbar where the surfers are! And the threat of a ticket if you are even found on the beach without a leash! Give me a break! What is going on with our country? What happened with our small town politics? These guys get into office and all they see is dollar signs... Eventually I plan on running for a small town political position and let me tell you I will represent the people not the business' that are located in the area. As if creating more surfing beaches is really going to impact the bottom line of these business' in any of these areas by deterring tourists.

 

okay, what ACTUALLY happened was that the surfer saw the guy at the last minute and jumped off his board and attempted to get out of the way. His hip ended up hitting the bodyboarders head as he went over him. The surfer is a friend of mine and he told me the exact story and showed me his hip later on in the day. He said that if he didn't jump off of his board that the guy would have died because he was going so fast.

 

What are the surfing beach laws in wrightsville and carolina beaches? When do they start? When do they end? Or do they go all year? How many blocks TOTAL are the surf beaches?

Also, I hear you guys talking about the leash laws as well. So, basically, if it is before the lifeguards are out, and I paddle out with no leash, I will get a ticket if a cop sees me? Even in the winter???? I understand that there isn't really any Kelp floating around from reefs in Wilmington, so shortboarding without a leash is pretty pointless, but as far as long boarding goes, I can't even go out and hang ten on a small day with no leash without the piggies coming after me? Even in the winter?

How about the damn piping plover huggers keeping beaches closed in OBX even after the birds have fledged? This should be a big story but nobody outside Hatteras island seems to care. Slippery sloap...
