Has anyone tried the "Dorsal" brand fins for futures. Just saw them on eBay and they are much cheaper ( looking to pick up back up variations and save a few bucks).
the RTM/honeycomb Dorsals can't be much worse than the big name brands. Pretty sure every brand of RTM are all made in asia (maybe, even the same factory...idk). They're hand finished to relatively loose standards, so each fin is shaped a little different...even within the same set (hope you're not a perfectionist). In Future boxes, main thing to check is how snugly each fin fits in the box. A future-based fin that's loose from side to side will never get tight (if a fin just falls into the box, keep returning the set until you get some that are very snug...like, an effort to push in). FCS have two screws at an angle, so they're always going to fit tight.
A lot of good information here from knowledgeable surfers. Important to know is, what type of performance are you looking for, what is your style of surfing and what type of waves do you encounter most often when you use these boards? There are so many variables in a way a board's fins respond in different conditions, and vise versa. What may be magic one day, May be total crap the next. Experimentation and having variable set ups may be your best bet.
andy iron tri-fins theyre sick and the one fsc carbons, i have i dont think they make them anymore lol but i suggest them.
Yep, I hear ya! I would also like to add, that a fins flex or stiffness, is going to make a huge difference, with the same board, in choppy sloppy surf or clean powerful surf. Making tighter powerful turns or drawing out your turns and holding a line, speed in those turns or bogging down is all in the set up, make up and placement. Hard rails, soft rails, concaves, vee bottoms, channels, etc; are all apart of the way a board performs in varying waves. Whether the fins are cheap or not it all depends on how you ride that board in varying conditions. Great suggestions though on fins, most will outperform the norm in the norm.
Good point on the fitting. I have a set of JJ large for my 6'4" thumb pin tail. I want anther set for travel. Went with the Dorsal performance core (slightly bigger fin vs RTM). Thx
RTM stands for "Resin Transfer Molded"...not an indication of size. All brands of honeycomb fins are RTM. RTM=Performance Core=Hexcore=Honeycomb=Foam Core=Core Flex=Procore
I was wondering why the search was limited. I was focused on size. Still cutting my teeth with futures set up.
