Is it a bad thing to let wax pile up on your board? Whats your favorite wax? I don't remember when the last time i stripped the wax off my board its been at least a year and its piling up a lot
I'm still on the same wax job from months ago, hardly every re-wax until I start slippin, sometimes I strip em down and redo the wax but not often. Been wanting to do that though now that it's Spring going on Summer here.
Since I'm up in New England and the temps do not fluctuate all that much, I strip them late spring for warmer water wax and again in the fall to go to cold water wax. Once you start putting different temp waxes on top of each other you can get weird flaking of the wax and stuff. It then starts ending up all over different things like the inside of the car and your hands and clothes and stuff. stripping the board of wax will also give you a good idea of what kind of life the deck still has in it. Also i f you are making weak spots in the glass or lots of pressure dents
Twice a year for me. When I put my 4/3 on and when I take it off. Use a wax comb frequently. It helps remove some of the old wax. Can't stand the feeling of cold wax on top of warm water wax....seems like the whole wax job wants to slide off the board
I wax when the seasons change. In the summer I use tropical stick bumps. In the winter I use tropical sticky bumps with a little cool sticky bumps on top. Super short winter down here this year. Water is already 62!
Do the front traction pads work well for you? I would assume so since you've got 3 of 'em. I honestly never thought about it in the past because I went through boards so quickly. Nowadays I don't surf as often and very rarely get into big barrels that would break my board. $30 for permanent good traction might be worth it....does the material feel uncomfortable after paddling for a while? Just curious, thanks.
It did at first, but normal to me now. I prefer the 3 strips vs 2. The arch of your foot kind of locks in on the center pad. PROS: No more pressure dings from my heal No melting wax when i leave the board in my car during work No more $2/wax at the AMPM Gas Stations The company I buy the material from sells in sq ft. I get 2'x2' - Cut down into 3 - 4"x21" strips, then trim off 3 inches on the bottom. With shipping its $55 - That's two front deck pads for $27.fitty each... Cheaper than Octopus/creatures/astro *Edit - I'm always in a wetsuite - Not shore how the grip on a bare chest would be..
I could use a good wax job Really though clean and reapply when that **** gets dark, look clean surf clean.
Word. Thanks for the tips. I'm always in a wetsuit too...not that I enjoy freezing cold year round, but if it means empty waves...
I usually de-wax about once a year- depending on the board. Some boards get ridden more then others... Although- I don't wax up every time I surf. Maybe every 4th time- I don't like when the board is too sticky. So I use the old school dr zogs wax... Usually I just rough up the wax with some wet sand before surfing.
