1965 weber performer hatchet fin , bought it new custom ordered 9'1 , 3 " balsa stringer , blue rails with black pin stripes , weighted like 50 lbs. or so it felt , I would carry it 2 miles to the beach , I think I paid 175.00 for it , wish I still had it .
'78 or so I think. Ugly banged up red Haut twin fin...Today it would be called "retro" fish. Then it was just a cheap board. I'd guess it was maybe 5'6" or so. Wide and floaty. I still remember the feel of those thick rails walking to the beach in Bethany Beach. Great board to learn on.
a 7'6 wrv longboard from warmwinds back in the day paid like 200 ish for it. great board until i realized i can surf a fish and have more fun but i was a kook at the time (not saying im not now)
9'6 Hobie Fletcher. Green and red, 1 inch stringer. Wood ply fin. Thing was a tank but it got me out there. Best 50 bucks I ever spent!
First board was a 6'0" Byrne HPSB that barely floated my 13 year old ass. Glass on thruster setup, probably 2 1/4 thick, if that. Bought from a respectable South Jersey shop. Looking back, I don't remember if I picked it out or the shop guys helped out but it was such a poor purchase. Still have the board but it hasn't seen the water in more than a decade.
First board was about a 6'10 Challenger Eastern single fin. Horrible board. One of the early "shortboard revolution" shortboards with narrow tails, wide noses, and hard down "Brewer" rails. Bought it at the first Kona Surf and Skate shop in Wildwood, when all they had were skateboards, surfboards, and bikes. Learned to surf that board at Stockton Ave., Cape May, when I was 13. My next board was bought new... an original MR twin. And it ripped.
10'2" singlefin malibu. Purchased at LB House in Melbourne back in 2003, still going strong. Love that old log.
6'4" Planet Blue with glassed in twin fins from Surf Unlimited on LBI in 04....have barely been able to find any info on the shaper etc since then. Any stories? Super thin and needs tons of power to move. Not a great first board purchase after stealing my gfs ...lost Shark. Sits in my bag while the CI Biscuit and 7' custom shape from Peak Boards get the action
I must have missed this thread. Never bought a first board. Being puertorican, I did, however steal my first few boards from you gringos coming to PR. My first theft was a Velzy pop out as a 10 year old. Some stupid moron gringo Air Force dude at Ramey left it on the beach and went to go buy an alcapurria. Boards was a piece of ****, but....hey, whom am I to argue with a free board?? hahahahahaha!!!
7'4" Ben Aipa. Taught my eldest to surf on it. She teaches gymnastics. Gave her the basics, told her I'd push her into a wave and to just ride it out prone, but if she felt comfortable to go for it. She pops up like she'd been riding for years, rides it until it reforms, rides that all the way to the shorebreak, catches the shorebreak, rides it all the way in, casually steps off and says... "Like that?". Yeah...you f'ing brat. Gave her the board. She had a prius. Her BF drove and she rode in the back all the way back to FL with the board in the front seat.
Bought a used 5'7 thruster with cheech and chong art on it when i was about 7 or 8 years old. Bought it with birthday money and still one of my favorite boards
