There are a handful of good books out there written by local guys, jim Freda wrote a few good ones on salt water fishing amoung some other local guys. I remember picking up a few at barns and noble.
Yeah, I despise treble hooks for the fishes sake as well as my fingers. I was gonna throw some metal at them but the only one I had with a single hook was dull. The jig head and plastic worked great other than having to sacrifice a body for every strike. I save all my bodies as the stripers wear them out so have a bunch of throw aways to use on bluefish. What a fight those things put up! I could have had 20 pounds of fresh filets if I didnt mind the mercury, lol. I let them all go. All the stripers I have caught in the last two weeks have had bites in them so I knew they were around. The last blue I boated tonight, 32 inches, had a massive bite across his mid section. Those things are animals.
Here's a short vid of one of those bluefish. I grabbed my phone to make a vid to send to the friend who didnt show. Sorry for the portrait framing, there was a lot going on http://youtu.be/4dIBvpuH00E .
Yeah, I've had days where that wind was howling. I was surfing one day last summer at the inlet, crappy wind blown day, south east swell. I was the only guy out, caught a couple crappy waves and thought screw it, let's try and fish. I was on the jetty, in coming tide, waves coming in at an angle and exploding on the rocks in front of me. It was warm and the bllues were running, it was so much fun! They were the smaller, 15 inch snapper blues, I think I kept 2 and threw the rest back.
Just hooked and landed the biggest bluefish of my life tonight. We estimated it at 42 inches! Got it to the rocks, a wave washed it into a little pool and I grabbed the leader tried to lift it up and it dropped off the hook. It made a couple of flips and it was back in the drink. As I was fighting the fish it rolled on the surface and my buddy said "i hate to say it but that thing is disgusting" lol, it was so big it didnt look real. When i checked my hook before the next cast i saw why I lost the fish, it straightened the hook!
They are hit or miss right now in DE, right place at the right time. PS, I haven't caught any yet. LOL On the bright side, I did just order two of these http://www.tackledirect.com/okuma-trio-40-trio-spinning-reel.html
Reminds me of a freshwater fish story. I was fishing out of a kayak with my son for crappy. I had an ultra light rod with 5 pound test. I hooked something big and it actually moved the kayak. my son saw it swim by and he told me I snagged a carp. I was fighting this thing and it jumped out of the water. It was a huge large mouth. A couple of other boats with much better, more sophisticated equipment came by to see what was up. When I finally landed it, A friend on another kayak took a quick pick and I let her go. Talk about ugly... fat, ratty, scarred up but by far the biggest bass I ever caught. I would estimate a little over two feet and over 10 lbs.
When I first got a baitcaster I took it to a pond on a golf course and was trying to get use to casting it with rat nest after rat nest. My buddy was laughing at me the whole time.Anywho I cut the line and told him I was gonna go old school and catch one and started pulling in a rooster tail by hand and snagged aboot a 1 1/2lber. Was fun as chit!
I still try to understand the value of a baitcaster vs spincaster. Less line spin I suppose. I've owned plenty of both but only have spinners in my quiver now.
Baitcasters are great for trolling because they don't get as twisted as a spinning reel does. They do take some trial an error to learn how to cast and you should adjust the drag depending on weight of the lure you cast so as not to get a rats nest. The old timers say they are more accurate to cast but I'm not so sure aboot that. I used to troll for trout a lot and found the baitcaster is the best for this.

When it comes to fresh water, I can cast a baitcaster very well, but I prefer spinning. Saltwater, I go back and fourth. I have two of these and I friggin love them http://www.abugarcia.com/abugarcia-...bassadeur-stx-round-reel/1315383.html#start=9 I also have two Penn 310's I use for bottom fishing and one Penn 330 for trolling.
Picked up a new penn Spinfisher 6500 and a 10' surf rod the other day. Took the new girl out to sandbridge and gave her and another, smaller, rod i have a heave with some finger mullet and hooked into a nice blue (close to 10lbs if i had to guess) with the smaller rod. Lost him about 10 feet from shore #Fishstories. Landed a smaller blue (14in. probalby 2lbs.) about 30 minutes later on the big rod. Was using single drop bottom rig on the big rod and double drop bottom rig on the smaller rod with 20lb Mono Used all store bought rigs, but Im planning on buying some line for leaders and tying my own rigs and snelling some hooks. Either way stoked to get on some fish!
The kid might be a dipschit, but good god people have way to much time on their hands. One of my "friends" said he'd kill buck tails if he saw him. Really. Really!? People need to quit be By pwussies
I caught this pickerel in my pond 1on a 10 dollar travel rod from Walmart that my friend gave me. Measured 22", I was using spinner bait. Schoolies are running on cape, my friend caught 48 in 2 hours
