i like to glass my fins on so they break off clean and not rip the bottom out of the too light epoxy glass jobs that i see so often.the fcs fins have very small fin boxes anyway .i dont carry my quiver to the beach and let them bake in the sun either.it must be something the real surfers do.
I like to glass my fins on, too... but for different reasons. And if you're glassing epoxy boards too light, you're missing out on the advantages and might as well be doing PU. IMO.
Iv heard many many horror stories about FCS fins and boxes. Not just the FCS ll system, but all. I never really liked FCS for that reason. But after the whole FCS ll system came out, I'm completely against them. The whole thing just screams money money money to me. Stick with futures. Or glass ons. Or anything. Just not FCS
I like my fcs fusion boxes. Ive amassed a lot of both futures and fcs. I've contiously stayed away from fcs2. I am, however, one of those guys that will bring 2 boards to the beach and switch fin setups or boards halfway through a session if conditions warrant or I want to experiment.
+1... one box instead of two plugs, quick and easy under glass install, super light, super strong, secure screw in system, no moving parts to wear out or fail.
Im surprised so many votes for glass-ons. Is that the whats cool again? No thanks...I find its nice to change fin set ups, and sure as hell makes airline travel A LOT easier without fins. No glass ons for me. I only have one board with FCS II, but so far no issues. With grub screws I can run older FCS fins. Its OK. I have several with Fusions, and I like them alot. The old school individual plugs weren't awful. I've only ever had one FCS issue and it was with Keels on a fish with the old school single plugs. Only two plugs per keel and in a hard turn I had a fin rip out of the board. But I was pushing 215lbs, and it was a big keel with only two plugs so meh.. Fusions probably would have held. I like FCS. Futures seem good too, bug once you have a stock of finsnits hard to change.
^^^ Exactly why all my keels are glassed on... fish and simmons. FCS for travel and new designs, and I choose Fusions. Personally, I've never had a plug blow out on a board I built, but I have repaired/replaced MANY of the old plugs on major label boards built with Asian labor... and EVERY ONE of those boards had an improper install.
only time I had a blowout was when using large twins in the first gen FCS plugs. Don't really know what happened, though, could have been a hard turn or I may have ridden too far in and, unknowingly, hit the sand bar...don't know if any system would've withstood that.
Lost my side bites! I surf a Tom Carroll Loose Leaf. The board came stock with FCS II. I set the thing up as a center with two side bites. FCS does not supply a set screw with the FCS II box so was not even an option and I didn't have a screw handy. Plus hey...it's supposed to work right! Anyway the side bites disappeared. Cost $75 for replacements. FCS was not too sympathetic about it, of course how would they know if I'm telling the truth or not about what happened to them. Side-by-side came out of the FCS to box and disappeared on their own. So be careful and get a set screw if you like your fins!
I have 3 boards that have the fcs 2 system . Holes seemed to be little smaller or jammed up from resin so when i attempted to screws into the holes , they would volcano up . Had to drill them out and clean out debris then slowly thread tap them in. If i remember correctly i got the screws at homedepote in those screw bins . Brought a screw with me from old fcs and got a little baggy of 12 that are stainless steal . Cheap too , cheeper then getting them from fcs and have not lost a fin yet .
