Take an uber to Wood's Hole. Put all of your stuff in a dry bag and tie it off to your surfboard leash. Paddle across Vineyard Sound to Tisbury on Martha's. Thumb it to Edgartown. Paddle across Nantucket sound- time it right with the tides and you'll be on Nantucket. You've now reached your destination! Oh, then kill yourself.
ha ha ha... thats funny! Actually who ever mentioned Jetblue had a GREAT idea. 450 total roundtrip tuesday to tuesday second week in july for 4 people. Thats not a bad price at all considering I would save myself about 3 hrs of travel time!
If you can, do the JetBlue flight. It's easy and quick. Do you need to bring your own board? If not, rent a board from Gary at Nantucket Surf School(nantucketsurfing.com) at Cisco beach. He has the normal beginner stuff (soft tops), but also has a couple nice mid performance boards for rent (epoxy Takayama Egg for example). Call him ahead of time and reserve what meets your needs based on the forecast. Summer conditions may be best for longboard. If you rent a board, you then just rent a bike and there is no need for a car. There is a bike path to Cisco from town. Easy. If you do rent a car, get something cheap w/o beach permit. You don't need the permit. Parking is free. The permit is only if you want to drive on the beach, which isn't necessary. Lodging, do AirBnB. It won't be cheap, but if you get something in mid island, that will be your best value. Bike to beach, bike to town.
Drive 9 hours to OBX? There's a time saver.... If you want something easy, just go to RI. But seriously, Nantucket can be done on somewhat of a budget if done right. Way more coastline than people, equals less crowds. The cost and hassle getting there weeds out the knuckleheads that would rather drive 9 hrs to save a couple 100 bucks. So there you have it.
Awesome info people thanks for all of it. Ive got a friend of mine that raves about Cisco and also Nobadeer. His two favorite places but Ive never been to either let alone even Nantucket itself. Looks like I will have to take a harder look. My wife keeps saying for us to just go to Ogunquit or York. I may do that to for a few days but to me its like surfing NH for the most part. Although I guess it depends who you ask. Can you tell Im putting the surfing ahead of everything else when looking at a trip? LOL I really want to get my family to Costa Rica but unless there is a 5 star hotel my wife and daughter wont go. My son and I are happy to crash in a beach bungalo where we can wake up to the sunrise and hit the surf!!
If you want to do a trip to CR, check out the Harmony Hotel in Nosara. Not 5 star, but way better than 5 star. Totally eco friendly and great vibe. Great for your family, and you can SURF. Plenty of other things to do as well, Yoga, ATV, Zipline, Monkey refuge, etc. You won't be disappointed. JetBlue flies direct from BOS and JFK to Liberia. Book early, as it fills up way in advance. Check out the articles in NYT, CNN, and Nat Geo. Most consistent surf break on the Pacific coast.
Oh, and check out Surfingnosara.com if you prefer to rent a home. Some great pads with everything you need.
I proposed to my wife in a rose covered cottage in Nantucket, stayed at the Summer House, the La Langedoc, ate and drank for free, and had tabs at gift shops for scrimshaw and stuff. All for free! I got the local marinas and car rentals to distribute a yachting guide. I printed it and did trade outs for ads. Too late for this year, it has to be out by now, get cracking for 2017. I'd start around February next year. In the meantime, Pavones is way cheaper right now.
July is the busiest month on the island. You can almost buy a house for what its going to cost you to stay there, plus insane crowds. If you don't have family or friends to stay with and you are not a one percenter I highly recommend going off season. Those beaches you mentioned are big party beaches as well so sometimes aren't the most family friendly. On the other hand there is a great surf competition at Cisco in the summer that's a lot of fun, and lots of eye candy. I lived on the island for over a decade and love that place, but can hardly afford to get out myself in the summer. The water is still warm in the fall with more swell and cheaper prices and plenty of people, and there is a youth hostel with family rooms you may be able to score for next to nothing.
Maybe I'm crazy, but I just don't see putting surfing as the #1 priority when going to an east coast beach during the summer. I mean, maybe you'll get some small surf, but probably not, and almost certainly not worth the hassle. If the surf is a priority, there are simply better, and cheaper places to go. I've never been to Nantucket, but it seems like you're going through a lot of hassle for a low-reward, low-chance payoff. Apologies for not answering your question, just thought I'd throw that out there for perspective.
A little slow out the gates, took you nearly 6 months to say something, but you didn't say hello 1st. Let's try this again Bub. Hello, who are you? What are your likes, dislikes. Do you prefer windows or no windows on your white van of duct tape and doom? Do you prefer Muslims or Hindus? What do you bench? Is your car the fastest on the block or do you live in an RV? Do you wear sharkbanz or depends? These are the things we need to know, not this ^^^ Crap! HAHAHA
